When did Fender drop the word "amp" on faceplates?
I know I've read this before, but when did Frender drop the word "amp" from the amp faceplates. I.e. when did Champ Amp become Champ? I know it was during the silverface period and I know it's been posted before, but I couldn't find it when I searched for it.

End of '71 beginning of '72?
I have a Princeton Reverb with the "-Amp" on the face plate. The serial number - A 26107 - according to the to the amp dater site is right over the '71 cutoff into '72. The interior of the chassis is ink stamped as having been wired on September 10, 1971. I don't recall what is stamped on the pots - certainly if the pots are original they should pre-date the September date.
Mine is a non-blackline, non-drip rail, glued in baffle job so likely one of the later "-Amp" Princeton Reverbs. As jazzguitar indicated, there is no clear line on these things - my amp is a perfect illustration of that fact. Fender would make a design change but would used the superseded stuff until it was gone - and so most dates are hazy. |
