Tube recommendations for Super Reverb

I am seeking advice for replacement power and preamp tubes for my 65 Reissue Super Reverb and would appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks!

FWIW

I have a 1970 SFSR. I absolutely love the NOS JAN/Phillips 6L6 WGB tubes in it. It has three RCA preamp tubes and miscelleanous other pre-amp tubes, including a JAN 12AT7 in one of the positions.

I deal with "The Tube Store" for my NOS power tubes- currently the 6L6's are $70.00 per matched set. Worth it, IMO.

I've also had good success with JJ's from Bob at Eurotubes, and when I had my Bassman re-done PTP George Alessandro installed some 5881 "cookie based" tubes (Russian) that sound very good. Still, my favorites are the JAN.

I had Boogoloo's 6L6's in my BFSR early on (at least I think it was those tubes.) A fine, loud and mellow sound. It's the classic SR tone everyone loves.

Searching for a little more breakup, I tried 5881s (I think NOS, but do not remember brand) on the advice of my amp tech. Subtly different. Hard to explain, just a little sweeter sounding, a little earlier break-up, OD starts out as more of a soft crispy edge to the notes instead of a thickened drive sound. Much as I love 6L6s, I preferred the 5881s in that amp.

Reissue SR's run some high plate voltage...470v IIRC.

I don't think NOS 5881's would last too long.

Sovtek 5881s would be happy at those voltages.

If you like Sovtek 5881s.

High headroom 7581A power tubes (I've used Philips for years) and a 5U4GB rectifier tube for sag. Have a tech assist you with this, to check and set bias and other important stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the re-issue use a GZ34/5AR4 rectifier?

I recommend the JJ GZ34 myself. I like the JJ ECC803's for a smoother sound than the "Russian" 12AX7's. Go NOS JAN Phillips or Mullard CV4024 for the 12AT7 slots.

TAD's

I have TAD 6L6GC-STR's in my SFSR.

Am looking at getting the small bottle ones for more break up.

Can't recommend them highly enough.
