Unbelieveable Twin

I just bought a Twin that is unbelieveable. It is a early70's
blackfaced,new Mojo cab,new Ruby tubes,carbon comp resistors,Sprague caps,all new cabinet hardware,new footswitch,Weber California 12's and Fender cover.

It is basically all new except for the chassis and the transformers. It looks like a brand new '65 Twin.

I have owned two Twins with JBLs and I have been playing a 65 Reissue for about five years. This amp blows them away...not even close. And, one of the best things is it doesn't weigh as much as my friend's 73 Silverface with stock Fender speakers. It is pretty close to the weight of my Reissue. Mojo uses pine and I guess Fender uses something heavier??

It cost me about the same as a '65 Reissue and it is not even in the same class as a Reissue. I'll match it with any Twin I've ever heard.

The guy's name is Rick and he has a website: www.vintagesound.net. I don't have any affiliation with him but he was a good guy to deal with.

I have some major issues with some of the stuff I saw on that web site. The guy seems to be replacing parts that perhaps don't need to be replaced. The tone and coupling caps, for example. The only tone and coupling caps that need replacement are basically any that have failed or leak. In the case of a tweed or early brown, the old yellow Astrons generally do need replacement. In the case of an early SF, the brown poop colored caps suck and usually do get replaced because nearly anything sounds better. But in the BF amps, and later SF amps that used blue case mylar caps, those usually still work just fine and do NOT need replacement.

Well, the Dude did say the were in fact early SF Fenders, and quite possibly full of "Turds"

The again, if you take a beat SF amp, put it in a fresh cab and go through the circuit, what's the big deal about replacing all the caps with OD's...should you leave "X" amount of original caps? What if they begin to leak and/or fail in a couple 3 years?

Still, seems like a great amp!

They won't fail. Those blue cased mylar caps in the later SF will last forever.

I have to agree w/ Tremo, I would never replace those blue tubular caps unless they tested bad. I think they are a large part of what makes a vintage fender sound like a vintage fender. Just about everything else is too hi-fi sounding. Brown doo-doo caps, or blue drops, OK change'em if'n ya want to.

I Agree with Tremo Too

No need to replace those blue tubular caps with another brand or type of cap with the same value.

...but who said they had Blue Tubular (or should we say cylindrical) or the Blue Drops in there? No one advocated the changing of the hallowed "Blue" Caps...

I'll bet it had brown turds!

Super Super!

I bought a Super reverb from Rick at vintagesound too, and it is an AMAZING sounding amp and it looks brand new. I am not any kind of amp expert, but I know this one sure sounds great, and better than the SRRIs I have played through. The price was right too. Rick is incredible to deal with too, providing responsive customer service. I think his amps are great deals.

Once upon a time I was an incredibly naive newbie to vintage gear (now you can just drop "incredibly") and believed all the hype about re-capping and Sprague Orange Drops, etc. So when I got my '79 Princeton Reverb I decided to BF the circuit and change out all those awful old Mallorys for Orange Drops. Mark bailed me out and fixed everything I broke. Well, after everything was said and done, it didn't sound quite as good as it did before I ripped up the circuit. I'd bet a nickel that those old blue Mallory caps were a significant part of the sound of that amp.

Take a big, deep breath.....now exhale....relax....ease your head.

Caps and resistors directly affect the electronic signal that is travelling from your guitar's pickups to your speaker. So, yep, they affect the sound. High quality ones do what the amp designer intends, lower quality ones may or may not.

Roli, who originally wrote "Caps don't have any sound" was either kidding, or misinformed.

Cheers, Tim
