Magnatone Conversion

I've gone Maggie crazy. My first was a gift from my bud, Sean Costello. It's a Titano 262R like this,

A brute, it has a lush, thick tone, stands up on it's own, with a snarly, but smooth, overdrive and a beefy reverb. Then you have the True Stereo Vibrato, wow. it's my fav, but it needs some attention, still gigable.

I drove up to Nashville to pick up my second Magnatone, a early 50's Triplex 180.

Straight amp, no reverb or vibrato, and it has the original Jensen's, a 15 and an 8! Man, what an amp. Sort of tweedish sounding, but not really Fender, rich harmonics and a smooth, thick overdrive.

And the most recent is a (Magnatone) Lyric Custom 330, a deluxe sort of amp, two 6V6s with True Stereo Vibrato and a Jensen 12. I bought this for a small BBQ/Blues joint I play every other month on Mondays (the Rib & Bone Review). Very pretty voice, a lot like a good BF Deluxe.

Maggies are going up in value, but they are still less than vintage Fenders, check 'em out if you see them around. (and sell it to me).

The Vic low power twin sits in the corner and here in the classifieds,....

Are the cabinets consistent? Are they more like Fender or Silvertone?

Magnatone considered themselves to be top of the line amps, better than Fender (who only had tremolo not "true stereo" vibrato, no matter what the faceplate said).

The cabs are very well constructed, the bigger cabs are plywood. The front face is angled back a few degrees (for better dispersion) and the rear mounted amp control panel is installed on an angle as well, so there are a number of complex cuts. The amp cabinets where more costly to produce than Fender's cabinets. For speakers they used Jensens early on and later went to Utahs. Magnatone mounted the amp assembly on rubber gaskets, and there was good attention to detail.

Preachin' to the chiore here boy!

Proud owner of one Maggie M-4 and 2 Maggie M-10's.

I don't bother to compare them to any Fender, they don't need the comparisons.
