Speaker Recommendation for Tweed Champ
Hi, folks
I just picked up a cool little tweed Champ. I'm getting some ghost notes and I'm pretty sure it's a speaker problem. So... I'm looking for a new speaker. I would like to get as much clean headroom as possible. What would you folks suggest? Oh, I tend to be partial to AlNiCo. Thanks! Michael |

tweed champ speaker
I have a '59 champ that had the stock speaker w/ the sticker that says "Approved by the City of Los Angeles Dept. of Building and Safety". I bought a Weber Signature Series P8RS4 that sounded better than the original, which was too dark for my tastes. I have since put the Weber in a 65 champ, since it came w/ a 8 ohm no-name speaker.
So, the original is back in the tweed champ. I experimented w/ some bright caps across the volume control to let more highs through at lower volumes. So now I'm happy w/ the stock speaker. The Weber signature is a better sounding speaker, IMHO. Not a lot of clean headroom, however. You might have to go ceramic for that. Then the problem is fitting the speaker in the cabinet! My P8RS4 barely fit in the tweed champ, while there's much more room in the blackface... Good luck! |
