Peavey Classic 1973?

I have the opportunity to pick up a Peavey "Classic" tube amp from 1973. I've not been able to dig up very much information about these amps at all - searches with the brand name and "classic" turn up lots about classic 30/50s etc., but not much about this one. It must be a pretty early Peavey design.

Is this a fairly rare amp? What do you know about them and how they sound?

I figure an amp of that age, there's a good chance it good use a recap, yeah? I don't want to get too deep into repairs on something I may not like or something that may not be worth the effort and expense.

Any info or opinions are appreciated, thanks!

Sounds like it is probably one of the early "tweed" (actually a type of printed covering) Classics that are a 100 watt 4x10, take on the Bassman.
The biggest expense with these is the pre amp tubes which are "compactrons" that have not been reissued and are getting thin on the ground, and are also used in the original Fender Super Champ. IIRC it takes four and you are doing well to find them for less than $50 each. ( they are behind a panel)
A hard to find amp, this is the second one that has popped up on here in the last couple of weeks
You might check with TV/radio hobby-repair guys as the tubes were used in TVs and they might have some pulls you could score for less...
Cool amp though and a net thing to have. used by both Pete Towshend, and Kurt Kobain.
If its one of the later black Classics with the SS front end, it is a good reliable workhorse that a basic service should put right..

The tubes are triple triode 6C10's. Groove tubes was still making them up until recently. They seem pretty expensive but some ANOS or NOS should last you a couple of decades.

See if it looks like this one, found this owners manual on the Peavey site. Might have some info you can use anyway.

That's most probably it.

SS front end, 6L6 power stage.

Some of those old Classics did have tube front ends, but IIRC, they did have an odd tube in the mix somewhere.

That Peavey link is the right amp. I had one.....my dad bought it new. It was the first really good amp I had.

Stock Emminence speakers. Solid State preamp and Tube ( 6L6 ) power amp. Sounded great.

Not anything like the Peavey Mace that was mentioned. I had that one as well with the Black Widow speakers. A beast - but if you want that Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet sound, nothing else gets close to these.
