Dr Z M12

I didn't see a thread about this amp yet so I thought I'd start one. If there is one buried on here, my apologies!

Anyone tried one of these suckers out? I am VERY interested as they are supposed to work great with pedals (especially WAMPLER) which is exactly what I'm looking for. Pretty affordable as far as Dr Z goes too.

Thoughts?

The description says great clean headroom, didn't hear any whatsoever.

Also it seems like weird marketing to say it takes pedals/ eats pedals, is made for pedals, whatever. That kind of marketing smells like teen spirit to me.

I do like Dr. Z's generally, just heard more of the distorted practice amp tone from the examples on this video.

They were using dirt pedals for most of the vid and never actually showed what it sounds like straight-up, but I dig it. Sounds way better than the Carvin Belair I'm using currently.

Sorry if I was grouchy. Looks like you have a Twin Reverb, so what are you looking at this thing for! The TR is the gold standard.

Ha it's all good. I USED to have a Twin Reverb but sold it. Too much amp for what I need. My search lead me to a Carvin Belair which I was initially okay with but it has a harsh/sterile sound to it as a lot of reviews have said.

Now I'm in the market for a small combo with clean headroom so I can run all my ODs and distortion on my pedal board. I may go check one of these out. There are A LOT of positive reviews and it hasn't been out that long.

I have heard some cool demos clean and with pedals...probably the best thing to do would be to try one in person if you can. I had a Twin Reverb...it was ok...I now have a Dr Z Maz Jr...it blows the Twin away in my opinion. Takes pedals real well and is super loud for 18 watts

The other guitarist in my band has one. He never uses it but out sounds ok. I prefer the ghia our maz 18. I also like the prescription Jr. Didn't see anything special about it. Personally why would you get a 12 watt amp for clean headroom?

Could you compare/contrast the Ghia with the Maz? I ended up selling all my amps and I'm left with a Carvin Belair that I thought was going to cut it, but it's not. I'm looking for a solid small combo with a good amount of clean headroom and that works well with pedals. That's why the M12 intrigued me but I'm also looking at the Ghia and Maz now. My price range is 1000 to about 1500. Thanks!

The maz is pretty versatile compared to the ghia. It can be made to have lots of clean head room. The ghia is more stripped down and simple with a raw tone. I'm not good at describing tone but of you want a really versatile rig with headroom the maz is a good choice. The ghia isn't really a dirty amp though. They are both good and can be had in that price range if found used. I gave $1300 for my maz used. Ghia can be found as cheap as $700

My maz is the reverb model. I'm not wild about the reverb so I use delay

I'm thinking the M12 is more for bedroom players so headroom shouldn't be a problem. I would say they would have made a higher wattage amp if they expected these to be played out with a full band.

Have you checked out the latest issue of Premier Guitar? They reviewed the M12 along with 8 other 2x EL84 amps. I believe there are videos of the tests up on their website, too. The three reviewers all liked it.

Yeah I did check that out - I think I'm still deciding between the M12 and Maz 18...leaning more toward the Maz 18 after corresponding with Josh from Humbucker Music (Dr Z Dealer). If you're after just clean headroom the M12 is it, but if you want the option of having some dirt, the Maz is the way to go. I'll end up taking a trip to Chattanooga to try these things out before I buy anything.

Just saw this amp as well. So am I understanding it as a bit more neutral in tone for the Pedals? Is there an effects loops or straight in? Would it be good for modelers? Looks pretty awesome!

I got one coming in Blackout can't wait to play it, but please don't expect a demo....cause I'm pretty much a beginner and I still suck. As I get better ill post something but by that time the M12 will be old news.

I have an M12.

The amp has two settings, Hi and Low.

The Hi setting is louder and breaks up. Pedals are not as good on with Hi.

The Lo setting has alot more headroom and loves pedals.

The key to getting more vol out of an M12 is running up the Bass and Treble controls up. I run my Bass at 3p and Treble between 1 and 2 pm.

I use mine for small room gigs where I would in the past take a PRRI and it also makes a good bedroom amp.

What does it sound like? Well. In High setting cranked up loud it reminds me of a DR Z Stangray cranked. It has been compared to a Zwreck but I don't hear that at all and I own a Zwreck currently.

The low setting is its own animal and its what I use when I gig the amp and use it as a pedal platform.

To get the most of the amp you need to experiment with the tone controls. Don't think of it like a Fender, run those suckers up.
