Is this an original Oxford speaker (in 1963 Princeton)???
Hi there, please take a look at this add (in Dutch, only look at the speaker, no reading necessary, haha...cannot copy the pictures):
http://muziek.marktplaats.nl/verster...ersterker.html That speaker code (on a sticker?) looks strange to me...code says 1961 Oxford speaker? But this is a late '63 amp...and I've never seen a code on such a decal...is this an original speaker??? Please help! Last edited by punch; July 25th, 2012 at 04:41 AM. |

Those stickers on the speaker were used in the late 60's or 70's. that speaker is probably a 1971. They mostly used CTS speakers on those amps, the ones with the square magnets. If it were a speaker from 1961 or 63 the numbers would be stamped on the frame or the magnate.

That's the way Oxford labelled their speakers. Not original, it's a '71 Oxford 10J4-5. The mfr & model codes are the tip-off. That is basically the correct speaker for the amp, but an early 60s brown Princeton would have had a gold frame Oxford 10J4-2, the earliest black / white Princetons (late 63 & early '64) would have had a 10J4-3. That speaker isn't OEM for any Fender amp, but could be a factory sourced replacement from the 70s. FWIW, the amp could have have also had a Jensen or CTS as original fitment.
That wouldn't keep me from buying the amp, I'd just put a better speaker in it and box that one up or sell it. |

There is nothing wrong with Oxford speakers. Some of their early 60s speakers like the gold frame are considered some of the best speakers ever made for studio work. So many were thrown away they are rare as hens teeth.
