1974 silverface super reverb. 600$ good deal?
Hey guys, i have to opportunity to take this amp home for one night only on a test drive. Its been black faced and has four original cts alnico speakers in it.
I don't get out of work until 9 tonight and have to be back at work by 8. So i have zero time to research this properly. The circuit has been blackfaced by someone i trust, other than that i know nothing practical about a super other than its legendary status. Ill post some pictures when i can. Cab is pretty beat up but has original footswitch and speakers. Provided i enjoy the amps sound tonight is 600$ a price i will regret if i pass on this? Anything i nee to verify before i buy? I dont really want to spend the money right now but this feels like a rare opportunity. Thanks. Mark. Sent from my iPhone using TDPRI

Some pictures. More coming. You can see the worn out cab and the 1974 speaker date. May be a 1975 considering the speaker date. (later in the year. )

Has it had a cap job, too? Would certainly need one if it hasn't... $600 is a screaming deal if it's in good electronic shape...

I realize I'm a bit late to respond, but if it sounds good and isn't badly buggered up - with 4 CTS speakers, I think that's a pretty good deal. I'm of the opinion that those original CTS's are the best match for a SR.
I've got a 74 SFSR that I bought a few years ago, paid more for, perhaps paid a bit too much for, but for what it is and what it does, I think it was a bargain. A 74 is pre-master volume and a really wonderful amp IMO. Large and heavy - yes, but what a lush and huge sound!

As far as the logo - that looks like the 1st version tail-less logo, which would be correct for a 74. A 78 would have the 2nd version logo, which has some additional small text added under the "Fender" I believe. Obviously, the best way to verify date is by checking chassis and transformer numbers.

No prob, SV
Hard to tell from pix, but overall, this one doesn't look to be in that bad cosmetic shape - I've certainly seen much worse SF faceplates and grill cloth. BTW, a lot of folks don't know that a blue jewell in the pilot light is best for SF amp tone I love these old SFSR's!

More pics. Crap 5881 power tubes. Good jan philips preamps tubes. Looks like some caps are replaced. Appears to be original iron. Closeup of any markings i could find. I dont know how to read date codes. Took pictures of anything i could with the date in it.
Sounds thin and weak so far. Ive got some really nice nos 6l6wgb's here i an going to switch in see if i like it more. Letting it cool down now. Took a video, might try and figure out how to get off my phone and into youtube. Getting late tho. Oh and the reverb sounds like crap. Anything over 2 isnt useable. Should i be afraid to dime this thing Or push it with a TS? I dont want to blow these speakers. Sent from my iPhone using TDPRI

Dime the sumb*tch, it won't kill nothing for a couple minutes. You might have something there, I'd probably go for it, put a couple hundred more in there and you got a really great workhorse.
