saying goodbye to a '68 super reverb

Every Friday night, we play at the local VFW from 7 to 11. Nothing too exciting, the older crowd there likes classic country so thats what we give them. (which is fine with me, I love it)

They have a storage room off to the side where they keep music equipment and other misc. stuff. One night I was snooping around in there and spotted a 68 silverface super reverb with 4x10's.

Started asking around and found out it belonged to someone I've known for a couple years. Asked him about it, and he said I was welcome to play through it anytime I played there, but he didn't want to sell it.

Obviously, I took him up on it and have been playing through it for several months now. He informed me last night he was taking it and selling it to a guy up north for $1,700 (which was way out of my price range) Now im singin the blues cause I have to go back to my prosonic.

I got so used to the warm, creamy, smooth tone of that amp I don't know if I can go back to playing through mine. It sounds harsh and bitey compared to the super reverb. Can I get that warm creamy tone out of anything that's not going to cost me a fortune? Any amp recommendations for around $600 to $800? I don't know a lot about pre amps or tubes, I just know that amp sounded awesome.

A used reissue that has a proper set of tubes should be in the ballpark.

You should be able to find a silverface super reverb close to that price range. I've seen some sell on ebay and craigslist for $700-$800. It'll probably be a mid to late 70's version.

If you toy with the multitude of settings on the Prosonic, you should be getting some pretty good tones.

I've tried every combination of settings on my prosonic, and it's just not the same

What kind of speakers are in the Prosonic, what are in the Super Reverb. Before it is gone, is it possible to rig the prosonic through the super reverb speakers???

Twin Reverb? Hard to imagine how cheap they are these days, but you should be able to pick up a SF pretty reasonable if you can't find a SF Super.

He got 1,700 out of that amp? I've seen blackfaces go for less. Don't get me wrong the SFs are great mines a 73 or 4 nonmaster and would be the last amp I'd get rid of.
But I wouldn't buy a SF for the same or more money than a BF.

I kind of looked around a bit. You could get maybe 700 for your prosonic, you could get a super reverb for 800-1200. You would loose out a bit, but you might be able to trade up.

A SF Twin Reverb is a great amp that sounds like it would be right for your needs, and for a reasonable price.

I used to get to play through a true blackface Super Reverb in church for the teenage "youth Mass" where I was the guitarist.

I will never be happy with any amp until I can get one... which will be a loooong time

Why not build one? Any used one you get will undoubtedly need work anyway.

Well you can come up here to Eugene at McKenzie River Music, Bob November the owner has some Super Reverbs if not go to Grants Pass, Oregon and Larry Music I'm sure they would have some there.

I would suggest calling up their before you drive a long distance for nothing just see what they might have on hand. Not guaranteeing anything, but just want to make sure they have something there for you try out

I nailed a SRSF 1 year ago for $500 and see 2 different SF Twins locally for $500, all on CL. Even if you need to pay $100 for shipping, still decent deal.
