Boston area Twin Reverb

http://boston.craigslist.org/msg/72383271.html

With grey JBLs for $550, looks like a decent deal

Looks good. That's a non-master silverface which is a better amp than the ones with a master.

Call him quick before I do :D

be careful

Frankly those JBL's are worth pretty close to $500 on their own. Also I've read about "craigslist" on the weber bbs or ampage bbs, anyway there was a problem with the seller. I guess a "scam" warning was in effect.

frankly I would scoop the amp for the speakers.

Baffle has been replaced, no wonder with the JBLs, but for the price I'd bet it's a killer amp.

Was the "scam" about this particular seller, or the Craigslist in general?

Anywho, I called about the amp. The guy seemed OK, and I'm gonna take a look at it Saturday

no not this seller. There have been a few Boston area Fender scammers on craigslist. So I figured I throw out a warning in advance.

I bought it today!

ser. no, is A24382, trannies all date to July 1969.

This amp was once modified to have a Master Volume, a hole was drilled into the rear panel, and a hole was "dremeled" into the chassis under the Tremolo Intensity pot...The MV was mounted where the Tremolo Intensity pot was, and the trem pot was mounted on the rear panel.

The JBL speakers are stamped "SEPT 10 and SEPT 11 1984" on the backside of the cones...they could very well be re-cones. Baffle board is a well-done, homemade plywood replacement.

The circuitry was "modded" back to Blackface spec's, except for the filter cap resistors. Filter caps are original (and will soon be replaced) All the coupling caps were replaced with Mallory "orange drops". All the wiring is small-diameter yellow stuff, it appears to be teflon coated, nice looking stuff!

The Reverb does not work. I swapped in a new tube, and I swapped a known good reverb tank and cable, and there's no reverb, but if I shake the cabinet, I can hear the reverb "crash" Hmmm...

Any ideas about the reverb? How do I check the reverb tranny?

there are 2 tubes for the reverb circuit

a 12AT7-reverb send
and a 1/2 of a 12AX7-reverb recovery

make sure you change Both.
also the reverb connectors can get oxidized and make a poor connection.

EDIT: the reverb issue was broken wire on the reverb tank's input jack...a dab of solder later, and all is well!

here's a couple pics,

The chassis is awaiting new filter caps...

Recones?

My guess is that the JBL's are recones, there is what appears to be a "repair sticker" on the frames, and a date is stamped on the backside of the cones (Sept 10 & 11, 1984)

Comments?
