Celestion - suggestions on something better and maybe a fix
Hi guys,
I have a Celestion G12T-85 in my Rivera (bought used a few months ago) and I am noticing a funny (not ha ha funny) noise that sounds almost like metallic scraping during notes, it is almost always there deep in the background of the guitar sound and it becomes more apparent as notes die off. I've ruled out tubes and the little can like things that shield the preamp tubes (technical name not known) and by hooking it up to an external speaker I feel like I have pretty much ruled out an electronics issue in the chassis. I am guessing now it's either in the speaker itself, something loose in the chassis or in the cab somewhere (reverb possibly - that tank comes out next to check that). Anyway. I am thinking about a new speaker since I just can't leave things alone. That gives me something new and one more possible source ruled out. How does this speaker rate for RnR and Blues in your opinion? Any really strong suggestions for replacement? I like the sounds of overdriven amps playing classic rock (Stones, Zep etc) and blues like SRV, ZZ Top, Johnny Winter but nice clean is useful sometimes. No metal - ever for me. The amp is rated at 55 watts and the GT12 is a 12 inch speaker that is front mounted. Do speakers wear out? Could this noise be from a mechanical part of the speaker itself that has just worn out? Thanks. bb

I've been a long time Celestion guy, but the new Eminence line is really great! You might want to check out the Eminence Wizard. The have a product cross ref chart on the Eminence site you should take a look at too.

Try powering the speaker with another amp
You have not eliminated an amp problem if you have not tried powering the speaker in the Rivera with another amp.
If you try this and still hear the noise then it is a speaker problem but if you don't hear the noise then it is a problem with the amp, probably a tube problem (microphonic) or a vibrating electronic part issue that is not uncommon in high powered combos. -Tim
