Back of amp fireworks! Ooooo...Ahhhhhhh.....
My '56 Deluxe stopped all noise except a sort of crackle that coincided with some blue sparks that were flying around the inside of the 5Y3GT output tube.
Does this sound like something just putting in a new tube could fix? Or is this more of a symptom than a problem? I wouldn't like to cook an NOS tube by putting it where there's a problem. |

That's a rectifier tube, so hopefully there's not a power supply problem(caps). Put a cheapy in there and see if that works.

The usual question....
Has the amp been recapped? If not, I would suggest that any service start with that aspect. Many a good amp has gone down to old, weak caps giving it up with catastrophic results. If the amp has been maintained properly and the caps are good and fresh, throw another 5Y3 in there. If it doesn't go snap crackle and pop, start measuring voltages and assessing sonics, etc.

Actually....this amp was given a good once-over (and a new transformer) by Caesar about 20 years ago, and I haven't done a thing except play it ever since.
Maybe time for a service, eh? Can someone who is handy with a soldering iron put new caps in? Or is this a job for the pros? Thanksfor your help! |
