What is it about Dr. Z?

Just curious why so many Tele players gravitate to Dr. Z amps.

because the sound awesome, are very well build, reliable, very versatile, take pedals extremly well, are not overprized, look nice, make you stop looking for other amps.....

He's got it down and has a wealth of knowledge about tube amp designs. The two Z amps I have are both Class A amps and both 12ax7/El84 amps. I guess just about any Class A amp with 3 x 12ax7 and 4 x EL84 tubes will sound good though. My Classic 30, on the other hand, has the same tubes but it's not a Class A circuited amp and sounds very different, although very good considering I only have a few hundred bucks in it. The Z Wreck, which is by far the best sounding amp I've owned in 40 years, also gets a lot of it's sound/tonal character from the Wreck speaker cab. They all sound great with Teles, Strats, Pauls, and Rics, BTW, and I could easily rid my self of every amp I've acquired and hung on to over the years and just stick with the Wreck.

They're great amps, and not as pricey as many boutique offerings. I had a Carmen Ghia, which I didn't bond with, but I also had a Route 66 which was an amazing amp! I forget why I sold it....

That's the main reason, but my brother got his because he saw and heard Buddy Whittington using them.
I've never had the urge to get one, but my brother has had 5 or 6 of them.

This. Brad Paisley merely opened the door for people knowing about Z's. I have a RxJr and I couldn't imagine a better amp. It really is amazingly versatile and just great sounding on any volume.

Openly I will admit that they're expensive, but I will say I have saved GAS money by not needing any other amp. Worth every penny.

They aren't even that expensive compared to a vintage AC30. That's not even including upkeep for the thing either.

I have an EZG50 I bought about 3 years back and I absolutely love the amp and it is a BF Super on steroids with headroom galore. I first played a "Z" that a friend had about 6-7 years ago and was very impressed, can't recall which model.

I saw Michael Burks in a little blues club, he was playing through 2 Z's...a Route66 I know and don't remember the other model...but OMG....what an effing tone this cat has...one to die for!

I have a 66 BF Super that I still use a whole lot, especially smaller clubs. I had a guy out in Tulsa give it an A-1 tune up...don't know what all he did but whatever it was...it made a 100% improvement in the tone....

But to compare the BF vs Z...as you know...the BF don't get any louder after about 4-5 on the volume without breaking down...the Z will stay clean at any volume...you can tweak the pre/post to get it somewhat nasty but it still don't capture that magical BF Super tone...but then I guess that's why they say the Z's work well with pedals...I don't really like much pass tremelo myself...but I love that Zzzzzzz....

I doubt it is Class A.
