Excellent!
What would you value an amp like that Wally? I saw a '68 a few weeks ago with one 15" speaker, but it looked 40 years old.

This is a clean one cosmetically, and all of the major components are original. IT beloongs to a customer of mine...first tim I have seen the amp. He purchased it at either a Dallas or an ARlington show from a 'walk-in' a couple of years ago. IT is in for a little bit of work.
Value? I don't know...other than I balked at giving him what he asked for it! LOL |

Vintage amp buyers beware...
Okay, so I have taken this very clean '67 BFTR apart and done some photos of it. Several have been curious about its value. Well, consier the particulars and share with me what you think it is worth. These pics reveal that indeed beauty can be only skin deep....and there are many ways to fool a buyer of vintage amps.
The tolex is all-original as is the grille cloth. The date codes on the transformers and the speakers agree with the tube chart and the chassis serial number...as well as with the chassis date stamps. Here are the problems.....Almost every solder joint on the board has been touched. All of the orignal tone and coupling caps are gone..replaced with Sprague 715's and Mallory's. Even the death cap has been 'refreshed with an Ornage drop!!!! LOL The only potentiometer in the amp that is original is the bias pot. All of the pots on the front panel are from 2003 or later. The latest datecode on a pot is from the 2nd week of 2008, so I take it that the work on the amp was done in the last 4 years. I believe that most of the resistors on the board are new. There are two spots where ground had ben made on the brass ground plate that are bare...showing that indeed the circuit has undergone total reworking. ONE can even see the traces on the chassis metal of the original ground wires from the board to that plate. Why would someone do all of this to such a clean amp??? I don't know. The board is original. ONE can see this becasue there are 5 (IIRC) solder joints that are original. The original solder joints are 'domed' while all of the new work has joints that are 'sunken' down into the eyelets. So....how much is an amp like this worth??? I suppose that depends on how honest the seller is and how careful a buyer is in ascertaining the originality of a vintage amp, right? IF one looks at the outside and dates the major components, the tube chart and the chassis serial number; one might give top dollar...or even more because it is so clean. Top Dollar on an exc cond, all-original 1967 BFTR is $2300 in the 2012 book. IF this amp had an untouched circuit and orignial pots, I wouldn't hesitate to ask more than that for this one. However, knowing what has been done to this amp; I am a bit perplexed as to exactly what a fair value on this one would be. IT is definitely hurt as a vintage amp, right? How much does its true condition detract from the 'book value' is a good question. I am posting these pictures and the info as one more installment of what ya'll might call 'Wally's Fair Warning's on Vintage Amp Purchases"!!! I have been rather adamant here in the last 6 months or so in urging folks to take a hard look at vintage amps before throwing down TOP DOLLAR for them. IF I had this amp in this cosmetic condition that was all original, I would feel fine in asking an over-the-market price for it. AS it is....half of top dollar???? That would amount to a difference of well over $1000 in value by my estimation. That is what "all-original" means to me when it comes to money. This is a great looking player's amp, imho. |
