Country Pickin' Amp ?
I've been using a Fender 57 Twin RI since 2007 and really enjoy it. Looking for a new "toy" so I'm in the market for a new tube amp. I play country "twang" mostly. Any suggestions or what you're playing. Been looking at lots of amps the pros are using but want to know from all you guys.

For years, the amp of choice for country pickers was a Twin Reverb. They weigh a ton so you can pick up a vintage one pretty cheap these days, when most people are looking for portable.

Peavey makes some great country amps. Most of the hard-core s..t-kickin' pickers where I live use either Peavey or older MusicMan amps. Lots of Twins, too, especially with guys who play both pedal steel and 6-string.

Tube amps are great for country. Have a DRRI myself. But some hybred as well as some ss
amps work well for country, blues, gospel, and light rock. You might check out the Peavey Valveking. It's tube with 40 watts I think.12 inch speaker.Light weight and affordable.$399 ?

Ask Albert Lee...I've seen him use Peaveys, and MusicMan. Heard stories of him using an open back 2-12 cab with a Bassman or Bandmaster head.
Almost any BF Fender can work, as can any early up to the solo series Peavey, Standel, almost any steel guitar amp, even the old tuck-n-roll- Kustoms.

Lots of solid state amps work for country. Basically, any amp that has a good clean sound (which is most amps, really) will work for country.
Would it be a good generalization to say jazz and country amps have much more in common than country and rock amps do?

The least expensive way to get to where you are headed, Mason, is to buy a SF FEnder REverb amp. I prefer the very early SF's....mainly becasue of the cabs. I prefer the 'floating' bffleboard/grilleboard combination compared to the glued-in baffle with the VElcro-attached grille board....from Apr '67 through 1970, IIRC. OF course, the big BF Reverb amps are a bargain in the market right now...and are not much more expensive than the SF amps.
I amthinking that you would love a Twin Reverb. Big sounds twangy cleans. You already have the singing tweed thing sewed up. JustinV wrote: "Would it be a good generalization to say jazz and country amps have much more in common than country and rock amps do?" Imo, all tpes of music need guitar amps that are tube based....so that is one similarity common to jazz, country and rock...and alternative and folk and whatever else is playing. (;^)...just my opinion, though. I don't like to hear country or jazz through SS guitar amps. Tube cleans are different from SS cleans...just as the distortion in each is different. YMMV |

Most people that don't play country spit out "buy a Fender for country".
but wait.......What kind of country are we talking? I use an Egnater Renegade in my country cover band and it sounds amazing. Vox works for Brad Paisley.....his early stuff is all AC30. Dr Z is a Vox variation. Keith Urban uses a ton of amps.....his Matchless amps sound incredible. Genz Benz Black Pearls are stupid good too. It is about the amp, the right pedals, and playing technique. I have seen almost every amp maker on a country stage and the right player/amp combo can sound perfect. |
