Comparing 1960s Speakers * Jensen * Utah * Oxford * CTS * Eminence * Rola * etc.

Quote:
Yes the speaker is an 8 Ohm Oxford 12K5 and is correct for that amp. A fine sounding speaker in my opinion.

I read the above comments within another thread. Interested, I began to wonder about
how Jensen speakers compare or fit into the big picture of 1960s Fender amps
since all I ever hear about is Jensen this and Jensen that. But, Fender did ship a
wide variety of speakers installed within many different Fender amps during the 1960s.

I've never heard of such admiration for an Oxford speaker. Is this usual or unusual?

VERY BIG QUESTION:
How would a "recording engineer sound technician" compare 1960s
Jensens * Oxfords * Utahs * CTS * Eminence * Rola Speakers
or other speakers used in 1960s Fenders???

This should be an interesting subject as I have only sought
Jensens and modern JBLs Celestions Altec Eminence etc. Toppscore

I wonder how many of our fine members are familiar with famous recording studio amplifiers?

Interesting. I have a 1964 with CTS original installs. I have seen Utah & Oxfords & Eminence in 1960s Fenders.
What do you meant by the "original upgrade" comment towards JBL's.
Thanks for the help to better understand your statement. Toppscore

JBL's were available on a special order as OEM at additional cost.

Some 70's amps even came with pyle driver speakers, yuk.

I was tempted to grab an old Rola or Cleveland speaker on Ebay recently when putting together my list of parts on my 5F2A build. I choked and went with a couple of Weber options instead, in the end. I did post a question about the old Rola and Cleveland speakers on this forum, but only got a few responses. Someone claimed they sounded good, but the general consensus seemed to be, go for it and let us know. I never did, but maybe should have. Seems to me that several Leslie and Hammond organs get parted out and have these less popular speakers in them, and end up for say on Ebay.

I have a 1960 Rola in an old homebrew amp made in the mid 60s from 40s components mostly.
The speaker sounds terrific. I'm no amp tech, so I really don't know much about it other than it sounds good.

Yes, I also read that Fender had JBL upgrades.
Very good memory. Did you order any from the Factory?

No as i'm not a fan of JBL's. Also the only new Fender i ever bought was a princeton in the 70's.

I do have a giant 1967 showman cab with 2x15 JBL D130F's that sound really good, but the they were re coned at weber using the paper dust caps.
Much warmer sounding than those aluminum ones.

HOW DO THE ABOVE 1960s SPEAKERS COMPARE WITH/AGAINST JENSEN SPEAKERS INSTALLED INTO FENDER AMPLIFIERS?

IS JENSEN THE CLEAR WINNER? I READ THAT SOMEONE LOVED OXFORDS? WHAT DO YOU LIKE OR HAVE EXPERIENCED?

Thanks. Toppscore

Had an EV SRO, that kicked butt. So heavy, though, it tore out baffle boards.
Old CTS, probably next then Utah.

Thanks Uriah Heep! If I read you correctly, are you saying Fender shipped
factory amps during the 1960s with EV Electro Voice Speakers installed? PLMK

Are you saying, in your humble opinion, that 1960s CTS & Utahs are better than
1960s Jensens, Oxfords & Eminence Speakers? If so, this is really exciting.

You just do not see 1960s Utahs & Oxfords & CTS & Eminence speakers for sale (the 1960s models).
Is it because they are more valuable, more prized, harder to get than Jensens?
Thanks for your response. Toppscore

My favourite speakers in order would be

1- Jensen
2- Oxford (close 2nd)
3- CTS
4-Utah
JBL's while they are great are just not what i like tone wise.

As for eminence speakers i've never seem one in a 50's, 60's, or 70's fender amp.

The Rola-Celestion G12S-20 Greenback is much sweeter and tighter than the current Celestion G12M-25 Greenback, and not woofy.

The clear winner is what sounds good to you. The rest is hearsay, conjecture and hyperbole.

Aaaahhhhhhhhh.
I hear that response all the time.
Which speaker sounds best to YOU?
If you had to buy just one 1960s speaker,
which one would you choose?
