Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band

One of the most famous examples of a guitarist using a bass amp was Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band. Duane's signatue blues slide guitar tone utilised dual Marshall Bass Model 1986 Heads feeding 4 x 12 cabs. His liquid playing style on his Gibson Les Paul and smooth tone from the amps were legendary in the realm of blues slide guitar.

One of the best examples of his ultimate blues tone is his performance on "Live at the Filmore East."

....legend sound
....legend performance

Younger players are advised to check out his recordings

Quote:
In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Allman at #2 in their list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, second only to Jimi Hendrix and in 2011 he was ranked #9. He is still referred to by his nickname "Skydog," which may be a reference to his signature guitar sound and tone. Allman died in October 1971 at the age of 24 in a motorcycle accident.

Another great Duane Allman performance:

Quote:
"Layla”
Derek and the Dominos, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, 1970

Inspired by Eric Clapton’s then-unrequited love for another man’s wife, it may well be the greatest rock-and-roll love song – and there’s simply no debate that it contains one of the genre’s defining licks, purveyed initially by Duane Allman (who borrowed the melody from either Albert King’ or T-Bone Walker, depending on who you ask) then later in harmony with Clapton on his famed ’56 Stratocaster, “Brownie.” Derek and the Dominos were an offshoot of Delaney and Bonnie, and as the group recorded its first album, Allman appeared after being invited by Clapton to lend additional guitar parts. The song was conceived as a ballad, but after Allman played the lick, the band rolled with the vibe.

That looks great J. I might have to try one someday.
I use my '70's Fender MusicMaster Bass Amp for guitar all the time, and even use it for recording bass. Mainly a guitar amp tho, and a damn good one IMO.
Best $200 I ever spent.

Vintage bass amps were not that different then guitar amps of the era, the speakers were the same or similar. These days bass serious bass amps are very different animals and the speakers are way different. That is not to say you could not get good guitar tone out of a modern bass amp and modern cab but the chances are much lower.

I play guitar, mandolin and steel through a Fender MMB, if you consider that a bass amp

Elliot Randall with Steely Dan played a Stratocaster with Gibson PAF humbucker into an Ampeg SVT bass amp on "Reelin' in the Years"

I love my 61 fender Bassman, terrible bass amp but KILLER guitar amp !
and I use my modern solid state Fender bassman 25 bass amp as a guitar amp or bass amp
and it does a great job either way

A friend in one of my bands years ago played guitar through a bass amp. It sounded warm to me.

I didn't realise how bright my tele actually was until I got a guitar amp. I had it about 3 years before I did so, and those 3 years I was playing it through a bass amp - Fattened up the sound good and proper but there was absolutely bugger all high end. Pretty much defeated the purpose of a bright guitar.

Keep your guitar amp and your bass amp - You will probably miss one or the other when they're gone.

On a side note, I play bass through my AC15 and AC30 - Anywhere up to about 10 o'clock (channel volume and master volume) is fine and produces a surprisingly nice sound.

I play quite a bit through a Kustom K200B4 amp head and a Kustom 3-15 cab which sounds great, not to mention that the old tuck and roll covering looks awsome.

My setup in the new band is a Peavey TNT100 bass amp with an AMT M-1 preamp in front of it. Sounds OK as of now. I hope I can make it sound better though ...

Marshall Bass Model 1986 Heads. I always thought this was a typo, but it doesn't appear to be so.

Fender tube Bassman amps from about 1958 through the mid 70's are all very good for guitar. My favorite is the Blonde Bassman from the early 60's.

Modern solid state bass amps will sound terrible for guitar.

I was drumming in a band for a while where there guitar player played through an Ampeg SVT-450H and the matching 15" cab, and he had the ballsiest guitar tone I've ever heard.

I'd love to do that myself but I can't really drop $1200 on an amp when the one I have is doing pretty well.

Have hooked up some Fender heads into a Carvin bass cabinet. Actually sounded pretty good, really surprising. Then swapped in an Eminence bass speaker and really deadened the sound. So with the right speakers a bass amp should work fine.
