classic 30, how many use effects loop?

i own a PV classic 30 for 2 years and i`m very happy with that amp.
i always plug in my pedalboard as i do it with my twin, straight in the input jack.
i know the amp has an effects loop but that takes one more cable.
do you guys have experience if the loop is worth the extra effort?

Definitely give it a try !

I have had great success and like the tone more so when using the loop for single effects, chains/ boards or as I am now using an old Digitech RP-1 multieffects unit. By using the loop you can tailor your sound prior to the effects and get a solid hold on your base tone before the coloring by pedals either on or in by-pass mode.

Would distortion pedals work in the loop too?

Yep !

Anything that works in front will work in the loop. Just follow normal protocol for lining up your effects and drop them in the loop.

I'm assuming here that the Classic 30 loop is like most, and in series between the pre and power stages of the amp. In this case, I wound't really reccomend running distortion in the loop, as those boxes are really designed to go into the front of the amp, and then be subject to the preamp tone controls. You may also have a hard time adjusting the effect to the higher signal level (line usually) of the loop, as distortion boxes are designed to run with insturment level signals.

Most choose to run time based effects into the loop if they are using any sort of preamp distortion at all. That way the reverb, delay, etc. can effect the whole tone, including dirt. The same goes for EQs. Some like to run them in front to EQ the guitar signal that the whole amp hears, and others like them in the loop to tailor the already dirtified tone. Of course, if you're running the amp wide open, the power tubes will be distorting anyway, and there's nothing you can do, aside from adding effects at the sound board, to get past that. Most people don't seem to mind though.

Either way, I reccomend trying all sorts of setups to get the tone you're looking for. Just remember that not everything behaves well in the loop.
