thoughts on Hot-Rod deluxe?

I'm looking for an amp with a much richer, fuller, and Bassier tone than my classic 30. Will the Fender hot-rod deluxe give me that bassier, smoother tone I'm looking for? and general thoughts about the amp would be appreciated too. thanks!

While I can't help you compare it with the Classic 30, I would say that the 6L6-tubed HRD (I have one) is a fairly cold, clean amp.

My 6V6-tubed Fender amps give me the warm, smooth sound that you may be after. IMO, you should at least try one before purchasing a HRD.

maybe try

maybe try a Traynor CV40, which is one of the warmer 6L6 based amps.

the HRD series have been known to be a bit cool and bright ... not what you're looking for.

cheers,
Mike

The HRD is a cheaply made amp. You can do a lot better. Look for an old used silverface Pro Reverb.

Ironic

Ironic post. I have the "bizarro-post" going on right now here:

http://www.tdpri.com/viewtopic.php?t=33287

I have a HRD and must say that the bass response is *much* better than the C30. I just tried a C30 and found it to be nasally (mids) w/ little umphhh. I've had the HRD for two years and have had it in for service WAAAY too many times, IMO. Great clean channel, but maybe a little 'cheap' on the parts.

I think I'm starting to realize you "get what you pay for".

Had an HRD for three years or so, beat the living horse poo out of it. Most reliable amp I have ever had. Never sounded quite where I wanted it to. A little bright and raspy for me, even with lots of tube experimentation. Bought a Traynor YCV40 a couple months back. It's everything I liked about the fender, but with a much warmer and smoother sound, better bass response, and here's the best part: The drive channel sounds killer. The drive on the Fender was completely unuseable. This is the only channel switching amp I have ever played where both channels were really good sounding. I found the reverb to be a bit lacking, but I don't use reverb, so that doesn't really effect me. If it proves as reliable as my HRD was, I'll have this amp a LONG time.

Have you tried any other speakers in the 30? I had a PRII that sounded weak and thin til I put a JBL in it. It opened it up, a much much warmer and punchier speaker than stock. I'm sold on JBL, got one in a Super Champ and SFPR. A wise ol man told me a while back that a speaker can make or break an amp. What about callin Ted Weber and tell him what you are looking for. If you still aren't satisfied you will have no trouble selling the speaker.

Good point. I guess I was just worried that if the speaker didn't help I'd be stuck with a lame amp that's now cost me $100 more. And also it was fun thinking about getting a sweet new amp. But I think I will try a new speaker. Cause like you said I can sell it, or just keep it and put it in a different amp. But i'm keeping my eyes open for a traynor too, these guys have got me horny for one.

Check the Weber board for used speakers.

Don't know if this will help,

and I haven't even seen, let alone heard, one, but Kustom should be introducing their Coupe 36 real soon. On paper it has most of HRD specs, with what Kustom claims are a few innovations, and it was designed by James Brown, Peavey's former amp guy, so it might be worth a listen when they hit the stores. Oh, it's supposed to sell for about $100 less than a HRD.
