OK...so recommend me a good s/s Peavey amp?

I think I'm gonna need a good LOUD amp one of these days, and dont' really want a Twin.

2 x 12s, 100 watts or so.

I've tried a LA 400, a Nashville and a Vegas and actually liked the clean sound on them (even though I've always had tube amps before). There are so many s/s Peaveys out there and I can't tell them apart, so somebody gimme a hint.

I would a-b a twin to whatever 100w + ss Peavey

the weight factor is the same, but the edge goes to the twin for tone. the cabinet is better. plus when you push the twin it will sound sweeter than the ss.

just curious and with all things being equal, why not a twin?

Two things: $$ and weight.

I just can't afford to shell out $500-700 for a SF Twin anytime in the foreseeable future.

Peavey Nashville 400

get a Peavey Nashville 400,
you can get em for 350, look on the steel guitar forum for a used one for sale. They sound cool with a tele, heck I know Redd V uses one from time to time, thats gotta tell ya somethin'

Not quite as heavy as a twin and I think the stock 15 sounds cool for tele, i was lucky enough to get one cut into a head and cab, another cool one is the session 400 limited, its a bit smaller. And I have been hearing raves about the nashville 112, lighter smaller and a 12,and I believe they are under 500 new.

I bought an old, VERY beat up Bandit 65 off of a bandmate who was $10 shy of paying his bar tab. For $10, it was an AMAZING amp when it's clean channel was paired with a Morley JD10 device. I liked it so much that I picked up a real clean one for $125, and I used both of them together with the aforementioned JD10.

Two of them simultaneously was overkill - one is PLENTY loud enough. The clean channel sounds cool, and the reverb is more "Fenderish" than almost any other amp that I can think out there.

If you really need two 12's, maybe you should look out for a Stereo Chorus, or something like that. I think you can find them used for around $200. Great amp bargains, if you're not a "tube purist".

Actually I think Redd was playing a Bandit the last time I saw him. You can certainly find em cheap enough.

When I looked at the title of this thread, I really expected a much shorter reply count.

Didn't know there was ANY good Peavey...

I ws just playing an XXL tonight

wasn't too bad, 2X12, plenty loud, three seperate selectable channels to mess with, all with different possible voicings, plus it looked pretty cool.... yeah, I know that doesn't matter.

how about a Carvin? A good sounding 2-12" amp under $400 is a tall order.

if you're looking for a powerful 1 speaker Peavey. I would suggest the LTD ( Redd V. used this last time I saw him in Austin). The Bandit is too low wattage wise.

Special 130

Back in the 80's you saw a ton of these and the bandits. Alot of the country guys would use two in stereo. You would see three times as many of these as you would see twin reverbs.

Nashville 112

It's a steeler's amp. Clean, clean and clean. It's new so it's rarely found used. For less money get a used older steel amp from the Nashville or Session lines. They are really big and heavy, with a 15" speaker. The Nashville 112 is more manageable for feeble guys like me... :D I think if you can manage one of those big amps with no trouble, you really owe it to yourself to think about a Twin instead.

We're like the fans of lo-budget sci-fi movies from the 50's.

Try the Session 120, I know an old blues cat who gets a decent smooth tone through one of those.

Choices, choices. See, they made so many flavors of s/s amps in the 80s and 90s, that's where it gets confusing.

Although a bunch of them had too many knobs and 'features' for me. I like em simple.

I did run across an MX awhile back with 4 output tubes and a spkr magnet the size of a dinner plate, for right around $200. The grape-colored tolex on it was too revolting, though.

As someone pointed out the the Nashville 400, LA 400 and Vegas 400 are really steel guitar amps. They are way more than 100 watts, more like about 225. They do make good LOUD Tele amps though for clean country sounds. And they are available cheap. I had a Special 130 for several years and it was durable, loud, distorted smoothly and could clean up for steel. My Peavey choice from what you say you are looking for would be two of the 80 watt Bandits run in stereo. I would turn my nose up at one the the Fender Stage amps either. The 100 watt 1x12 and the 160 watt 2x12 are great sounding SS amps.

Yeah, they are cheap, reliable, and sound great on the clean channel. They have that Peavey SS "Supersat" distortion channel, which is a love it or hate it thing (I hate it) but you can use pedals instead. Brian Henniman from the Bottle Rockets uses a Special 130 when he's not abusing Classic 30s and the occasional Bravo.

Also, just about anything from Peavey's TransTube line is about as good as SS gets. The distortion sounds more believeable on the TransTube stuff than the "Supersat" did. You should be able to find a good used Special 212 well inside your budget constraints. If you can afford an XXL, that's the way to go, however. It's the best sounding all around SS amp I have ever played.

You need to stop by some time. I've got a few amps I'd like to introduce you to. 8)

good s/s peavey - 130 Special

I was looking for a Peavey Bandit and ended up with a Peavey Special 130 combo on EBAY.
Its' loudness is plentiful on clean and also has an interesting drive sound. I use it as a backup amp for my valve Fender 75.
On 3 or 4 it is more than loud enough for a rehearsal. On 4 or 5 it will be well-heard at the pub.
Anything more than that I will not try without earplugs.

I found a 65 watt 1 x 12 TransTube in a pawnshop for $129...I think I may have to snag it.

Any of the new transtube Peaveys will do it. I'll also recommend an old Bandit 65. They're cheap. They sound good. And they're loud enough to cause hearing impairment.
