"Jumpering Question"

I know it's been discussed to death- yet I have a question. In my search for "jumpering" of a 59 Bassman style amp on amp central- I found a thread that suggested using a jumper from input one normal channel to input two bright channel, and then guitar into input one bright channel. BUT- when I picked the amp up after having it re-done, I think the guy that demonstrated it did it differently. Is there another/better way? Will a different method harm the amp? Thanks- just trying to learn without doing harm.

No right or wrong way

Try all different combinations and different volume and tone settings until you find the one you like. I GENERALLY plug into the normal channel and jumper into the bright channel, then set the normal volume at about 6 to 8 and the bright at about 2 to 3. Control the volume from your guitar - if you are using a Strat or Tele. This doesn't work so well with my Gretsch guitars.

Thanks...

yes, I am using "both" a 52AVRI and a G&L Legacy. So it doesn't matter which input you plug into (as far as 1 or two)..?

Inputs

Maybe someone can confirm this, but I think input #2 on each channel is considered the "low" input, i.e. there's a resistor in to lower the gain a bit. So, if you plug into Bright #1 and jumper from Bright #2 to Normal #1, the signal is attenuated a bit.

I've run a Y cord so I can plug into #1 on both channels w/ no attenuation. For a while, I jumpered my inputs internally so both channels were connected w/no short cord. This is easy - only 1 wire to move. I put it back to stock recently because I wanted to put a Holy Grail reverb between Normal #2 and Bright #1 as sort of an effects loop.

Right now I'm running 12AY7 - 12 AT7 - 12AT7 w/ Svetlana 6L6s biased to around 40mA w/ RCA 5U4 & it sounds pretty sweet for home use. I got a Marshall BB1 recently and they're a good match for that early Clapton tone.

Glad to see you're happy w/the results of your amp! I'm going to add a Hoffman board to my RI as soon as I get my basement finished. Should then be a lot easier to tinker with and maybe it will sound better as well.

Marky D is right- Y cord is the only way to go.

Good tips all, thanks. I've always just jumpered from #2 to the other channels #1.

I'll try a Y cord.

Or fool around with an ABY box?

I'll Give The "Y" a Try

Sounds like a plan- I suppose I can get one pretty quick at a GC or Sam Ash.

Speaking of Holy Grails- although I'm digging the tone of the amp alone, I can see where an outboard reverb will be helpful. I've seen enough on this board to know the Holy Grail is well thought of, and used it fits the budget well right now.

Thanks for the tips.

My $0.02 worth

The normal channel has more "oomph" than the bright channel anyway, on my original '60. I don't have a problem jumpering from #2. A y-cord might be the ultimate, but I like keeping things simple.
