Just got a 69 Super Reverb.

Hey guys!

I've been using a HR Deluxe for the last 5 years or so, sometimes for smaller gigs a Pro Junior. Today, I saw an offer that looked too good to pass up and I got a 69 Super Reverb for $600.

I've only played it for about 20 minutes and I've found that it still sounds pretty good at low volumes. Right around 2 and 3 the clean is fantastic sounding. A lot different than the clean channel on the HR Deluxe. I turned it up past 5 and it's way loud, but the break up is awesome! I hope I have occasion to crank this puppy sometimes.

It seems to take my peddals well which is good. So far I've noticed it can get a bit boomy on the low end, but that's easily ammended.

Anything else I need to know about this. I've never owned a vintage amp before. I'm very excited, but also kinda nervous as I don't want anything bad to happen to it.

Unless you know that the amp has been recently serviced, you might have the folks somewhere like Top Gear in La Mesa (or ask another guitar player if they know a good tech) take a peek at it, they'll be able to tell if anything bad might happen to it. Since you mention "kind of Nervous" that's about the best peace of mind I can recomend

Congrats on your new Super Reverb!!! I picked up a 1970 Super earlier this year and its been, by far, my favorite amp ever since. I hope you'll enjoy your amp as much as I've enjoyed mine.

All I did to my Super Reverb was put in new tubes and have a tech re-bias and take a quick look. Great amps..

Take care..

Find an amplifier technician. Take it to him and ask him to give it a look over. Specifically ask for a cap job. Also, ask him to clean up any shoddy work in the chassis if he sees any. Who knows what previous owners or techs could have done in there. It's always good for a guitar player to know a nearby amplifier technician.

Congrats on a great amp. As others have said if it's got original electrolytic caps they should be replaced, or at the very least make sure they aren't bubbled or leaking.

Enjoy it.

i have one also i acquired this year. i was kind of worried just like you. i highly recommend the cap job like others say but i would replace the power cord with a grounded power cord if it hasnt been done already. if the tubes are still good then thats great otherwise id change those also.

I recapped my '67 earlier this year and it made a huge difference in the sound. If the amp hasn't had the filter caps changed yet you probably want to have at least that much done.

They really are great amps. Have fun with it!

dont mean to change the subject in here but i posted a couple days ago about my super and while i have some super owners in here i figured id try to get a definitive answer. do super reverbs have a slight hum to them when they are off of standby? i had my speakers reconed and previously only onw speaker was working so i didnt hear this hum but now since all 4 are working i just want to verify if this is typical to have that slight hum?

Congratulations! You have what I consider to be one of the all time great guitar amps. My main amp actually started life as a 69 Super Reverb, it is now rehoused as a "Vibroclone," in a 1x15 cabinet with a JBL. I love that circuit.

Take it to a tech, check out the caps, tubes, transformers, etc. If you keep her in good shape she should last a lifetime! :)

I know it just got new tubes a few months ago according to the guy I bought it from, who seemed pretty honest to me. Not sure about the caps, so I'll get 'em checked out.

I'm blind so my pics come out like ******, but I'll have either my GF or one of my band mates snap a couple of shots and post 'em up.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll prob run it over to top gear, those guys are great.

The best lead tone I ever got with a guitar, amp and cable was through a '69 SR. I was playing at a street dance with nothing but vocals in the PA. So I had to keep turning it up. Around "7" on the dial, it got a smooth creamy lead tone with tons of sustain. I was playing a '68 Les Paul GT with P-90's so that was also a factor. The downside was that I was playing in a country-rock band and needed an undistorted sound. But that sound has been my benchmark lead tone ever since.
