Tube question
I recently bought a THD Tweed 2x10 combo (sort of a 59 Bassman clone). The amp is around 12 years old and it has Groove Tubes all around (four12ax7:s and two 6L6:s). According to the manual the amp should allways be used with Groove Tubes. I have four 12ax7 and two 6lL6:s from JJ that is only about one year old from an other amp I´m not using.
- Is the manual suggesting Grove Tubes just cous THD and Groove Tubes had some kind of deal or is the Groove Tubes so much better than other tubes so that I always should use them in the THD? - If the Groove Tubes are indeed 12 years old, should I swap them for the JJs? |

Well....
It may not be that THD has a deal with GT, I think it is probably a matter of the fact that the groove tubes have a rating number. So for example, if your amp was biased with a groove tube of a certain number, replacing the power tubes with the same number means that you do not have to re-bias.
The preamp tubes do not need to be biased, and you can use any brand there. Mike |
