Blues Jr. - Getting Fat

OK, so I know that when the fat switch on my Blues Jr. is on my tone gets louder and a little less clean.

Can some of you more technically sophisticated folks tell me what's going on behind the scenes?

It switches in a cathode bypass cap on one of the preamp tubes.
