I'm personally in favor of Non- Master Volume Amps, using a powerbrake, or THD hotplate to "tame it" in smaller club settings, or simply pulling some of the power tubes.
I play a 1967 Blackface Fender Bassman going in to a Avatar 2x12 cabinet loaded with Celestions G12H30's and Vin30, and it rocks! Only mod are: I use New GT 12ax7M's in the preamp ( Groove tubes Mullard reissues), and NOS 5881 for Power tubes. For Extra drive if needed use a good Overdrive ( I use a Nobels ODR-1) I'm also a Huge fan of Marshall Plexi reissues ( the 1987, or 1959SLP)f you make some slight mods. Change the PCB to a handwired board ( metroamps are the best!), upgrade the transformer to a Mercury Magnetics, and get some good tubes..( again the Mullard reissues for the preamp, and JJ/Tesla E34L's...not the EL34), will give a some killer tone! :D Nice thing about these amps, is both are classic, and can be used in just about every type of music, depending on guitar used, and effects. You can see the price of the boards are cheap...under $200 dollars, transfomers $120.00 -up. If you are handy, you can do the uprades yourself, and your reissue marshall will sound just like a Old marshall Plexi. marshall reisusses can be found on ebay bewtween the $600-800 range. Now as far as Old Fenders go...Bassmans are still a good value. I bought my '67Bassman on Ebay for $375.00 No mods, I just upgraded tubes. Mine is the AB165 Circuit, and those can be found in some of the early silverface bassmans (68-69). I paid $278.00 for my loaded cabinet from avatar speakers ( http://avatarspeakers.com/ ) and Dave has the best prices around....so total I paid for my rig..$653.00!! Try to find a modern, point to point wired, all tube amp for even double that price! And nothing beats the sound of any of my guitars through the bassman...with my Les Paul, I can get Zepplin, ZZ top...all the classic '70 sounds. With My strat...I'm in SRV land!! And the Tele...well let's just say the Bassman is MADE for Teles!!! Ken |

a twin and a ac 30 sitting on top of their flightcases. one clean (twin) one on full blast. that sound is hard to beat. in my days as rockstar, 20-25 years ago, i used a music man 112 65 plus a 50 watt marshall halfstack. that lookes pretty awesome, was still portable in a way, and the sound was really tweakable. and way way loud. alys trouble with the soundguys.... theese days will never come back man, enjoy them while they last!

wow... I never thought this thread would come back... I feel like my past has come to haunt me.
At any rate, I should update people... The gig ended up being rather short lived as the band broke up pretty early on... seems there had been more internal conflict going on that I had any idea of before joining... Luckily, I had decided that through my time with them I'd rent equipment, learning what worked for me - so nothing lost. I did end up selling my HRDx at the time and picked up a mesa/boogie 50 Caliber 1x12" combo for dirt cheap ($400 Canadian - can't complain about that). Not everyone's cup of tea, but a very flexible amp, and sounds HUGE through a 4x12" cab. Though I must say, having tried a lot of amps at this point, I much prefer a VOX AC-30, as well as ORANGE amps (can't buy them for $400 though). Since the band broke up I've been teaching full time locally, and gigging casually on the weekends with a bunch of older guys doing a blues/rock thing... Hear us HERE Really, I just want to make sure I'm playing music. Been using a '65 deluxe reverb for that lately... I've got a few other projects on the go right now too, but nothing that absolutly requires a huge rig... Anyway, thanks for all of the comments and suggestions. I learnt a lot from you guys, and I'll certainly be looking back at this thread if the need arises again. At 22 years old, I figure I've still got quite a few years of playing music left in me, and anything can happen. Patrick |
