Hot Rod Deluxe...loud BBBVVVVTTTT

Hello all,

My sons Hot Rod Deluxe developed an intermittant, loud buzz or BBBVVVVTTT to be more precise. It would do it just idleing with nothing plugged into it and the volume controls had no affect.

It just did it again and while it was malfunctioning I wiggled the tubes and the noise stopped when I got to the phase inverter. It would snap crackle and pop as I slightly wiggled that one phase inverter tube.

I replaced all the preamp tubes just to be safe and it seems to be stable now.

These were new JJs. Is it possible for the phase inverter to short or some such resulting in this behavior?

Thanks,
Fret[/i]

Check out this site.........

I used to own a HRD and mine did the same as you have described. Turned out to be a bad preamp tube as well.HRD Site

Input Jacks

Check the input jacks and have them replaced with higher qulaity components. They are a notorious source of the problem that you describe.

Thanks for the help...

it turned out to be a bad phase inverter. I replaced all the preamp tubes to be on the safe side...then noticed a loud rattle in one of the 6L6s as well. Replaced them too. Sounds fine now.

These were all new relatively new JJs which surprises me.

Update...DEAD!

well, the saga continues.

My son reported that the amp quit 2 nights agao and makes no sound at all now.

When I fired it up to test it worked for a second when I flipped the standby switch to on then immediately cut right out. It generates no hiss or sound at all...no reverb crash...nothing. I plugged into the effects loop return to see if that would do anything...nuthin. I changed the power tubes...nothin.

Off to see Bob Fenton for repair on Saturday, but anybody got any ideas in the mean time?

I did not try replaceing the preamp tubes...possible problem there?

Thanks,
Fret
