Help...VR needs speakers

Edit title and bumpo...

I've posted over at the Weber board also. Want ya'lls advice for a day or two before I do this.

My beloved drip edge VR needs speakers. The original Oxfords are becoming shabby and no longer hold up as they should at gig volumes. Depending on venue, the amp is asked to run btw. 4.5 and 7 on the Vol knobbie (running 5881's) - and must handle almost everything from Alt Country thru Blues and light Rock.

Tele thru a smallish board, of course.

I don't want the speakers to "out perform" the tubes, as the 5881s break up wonderfully once I get above Vol knob at 5.5 ish...what else should I toss out to ya'll.

I'm thinking a pair of Ted's 10A125s.

What about your thoughts.
btw, I've enjoyed the Oxfords - say what you will, but they've done their job well - but those guys are just too tired to continue.

I don't have an answer for you, but I've gor a SFVR that's going to get speakers as the previous owner--I've had it since the late 80's--put one 12 in there, doesn't sound bad, doesn't seem to have any mismatch problems, but I want to put it back to 2 10's like it was made for.
I like your statement that you want the tubes to break up before the speakers. I assume that's what you meant by "out perform". So far I can't even decide between alnico and ceramic. I'll be interested in the answers you get and also in hearing what you finally decide.

Heres an option,

I've seen this more than once around here.
Look into a combination of Weber Blue Pup/Silver Bell.
I don't know the new numbers for these speakers, but I'm sure Ted will know what your talking about.
Also an AllTone 1040/Celestion 10"(don't remember the model) sounds great in a friends VR.

my new favorite 10" speaker: the emenence 10" "copperhead"...part of the new "patriot series" offerings....

they sound fantastic, readily available and much lower price than webers. great highs {bell like}, solid lows and a nice, defined "immediacy" in it's voicing.

weber? weber who? i've made the change...y'all should too!

10F150

Only a bit of experimentation to report.

I too had tired original ceramics in my 69 VR and needed to replace them with something that would work okay for jazz, where a good midrange was more what was needed.

I initially replaced them with new Jensen P10Rs that had come out of a Bassman RI. They were very bright and kinda 'dirty' and I was not happy with them. I was left wondering what all the fuss is about with AlNiCos although I now understand that there were design issues with the earlier version of this particular speaker.

I replaced them with 10F150s which have worked out fine.

RN

PS The Jensens went, via my amp tech, into an amp that got worked hard pretty much every night and he tells me that they mellowed out with about a month of such use.

Thanks, and a thought...

Thanks,

Mark, I'll look into your suggestion.

A thought just crossed my feeble mind...how on earth can I expect to get a speaker choice right the first time?

I'm a plug and play kinda guy - certainly (I hope) not a cork sniffer - but golly, it took forever and far too many $$ to get the pedalboard up (with compromises).

That board cost a hell of a lot more than a few pairs of speakers...on stage in a smokey bar, who knows anyway.

Try a ceramic/alnico combo

I've put in a Weber 30w P10Q paired with a C10NQ (don't know the new designations) and that's a killer combo!!
