Pic of my champ

Have any idea what year this may be? I am thinking late 60's. It has the tail on the Fender logo.

Do you have a picture of the tube chart inside the amp chassis?

What's the serial number? I can tell you what year it is from that. It's an "A" followed by 5 digits on the right rear of the chassis.

I think the tail on the logo went away in '74 or '75.

I have its twin in very good original condition. Very sweet amps, in my book. The circuit and build quality of the blackface and dripedge silverface but less collectible and so cheaper. Mine is A18052. Based on the serial numbers I believe they are from 1970, although the link I use has moved on me.

Does the AC cord have a plug with 2-pins or 3-pins?

Serial number dating link.

I found the link:

http://www.tcguitar.com/articles/gagliano_pt5.html

Quoting from it:

Champ AA764 (blackface)
A00100 to A02000 - 1964
A01900 to A05200 - 1965
A05200 to A12000 - 1966
A12000 to A12200 - 1967

Champ AA764 (silverface)
A12200 to A13900 - 1968
A13900 to A18000 - 1969
A18000 to A30500 - 1970
A30500 to A32000 - 1971
A32000 to A35000 - 1972
A32000 to A42000 - 1973
A42000 to A50000 - 1974
A50000 to A63000 - 1975
A63000 to A85000 - 1976

I believe it would indicate your amp is a '69. Bear in mind, though, that I understand the serial number dating to be ball park figuring to some degree.

Looks like a late 69 or 70. My SFDR has the same features, but is a mishmash of different parts: 69 transformers, no drip edge, 68 caps, stamped 1970 inside the chassis, Fender with tail, and "amp" on the faceplate.

It still has the two prong plug. Which I plan on replacing with a three prong to keep from getting fried.

Mine has a black three-prong that I always assumed was original to the amp - what was being used in 1970? Anybody know? I thought red plugs were mid to late '70's?

I think the red plugs were used when they first went to grounded plugs.

I will confess that I haven't put grounded AC cords on any of my vast collection (3) of vintage amps yet. But I do use an AC voltmeter to measure the potential between the amp chassis and anything grounded (like a microphone) and reverse the plug and/or switch the "death switch" if necessary to find the best compromise.

Is this dating system similar to automobiles...

IE: You buy a 2005 car in the 2004 calendar year?
