'65 DRRI????
So...my buddy from the music store I shop at regulary calls me and says he has a deal on a '65 deluxe reverb I cant pass up. It was put on layaway and was being paid on, but the person paying on it stopped making payments and the store hasn't been able to get in contact with him for 4 months now.
Anyways, I know its a reissue and there are those that have their opinions on them, but everywhere I've looked, this amp sales for $750+ brand new. They have offered it to me for $550 brand new. I'm thinking I would almost have to be crazy to pass this up. So I wanted to get a little support from you guys. Also, if I do follow through with this, what are some cool mods for the dlx reverb other than swapping out tubes. I'm sure there are a ton of posts here, but I should be studying for my finals right now. Thanks in advance!

The price is right. To sound it's best consider a new set of tubes (use JJ 6V6s) and a bias job, as a minimum. A new Weber alnico speaker will sound sweet. Also, get rid of the bright cap to smooth out the high end.

If you can get a new DRRI for $550 jump on it right now!

Just tried one at GC
the PCB DRRI re-issues are often talked about in low regard...but I thought the 65 DRRI sounded great. Sure you can always improve these (somewhat) with a new speaker and different tubes. But after those changes are made, other changes would be less noticeable.
That sounds like a great price for a new amp. If you like the tone, don't hesitate I'd say. |

This amp sounds great!!
All I can say is I have been deprived for the last 2 years playing through a HRDeville. Total price on this DRRI was $600 brand new, and I love this amps tone. Everyone talks about upgrading the speaker and changing out tubes, but I dont see how it can sound any better. I know the speaker probably isn't broke in yet, so we'll see how it sounds after playing through a couple of gigs this weekend.
I will probably change out the tubes to JJs. Does anyone know of a website that walks you through rebiasing this amp? I just finished rebiasing my HRDeville and didn't have a problem with it. Hopefully this one will be the same. This amp makes me want to play all the time now...too bad its 12:30 in the morning! G'night!

The deal with this amp was...some guy had it on layaway and stopped paying on it. After several months of trying to contact him, the store is able to resale the amp. (really the other guy probably payed half of it off already). So the manager called me asking if I was interested. It may not be vintage, but for the price I payed... it sounds damn good. Of course I play country, so this suits my style of playing perfect.

For biasing an amp, the easiest thing to do is get a Weber Bias-Rite.
If you'd like to warm up the Reverb/Trem channel so it's more like the Normal channel, replacing the preamp tubes with good NOS tubes will go a long way. I use Brimar NOS 6V6 tubes in my DRRI and love them -- very smooth and warm. I also put in a Weber Blue Dog alnico. It has great low-mid punch and better harmonics than the stock Jensen. |
