Sleeper Silvertone

I picked up a Silvertone1472 at a show this past weekend,
I did'nt need another amp but after playin it for awhile I was
hooked. 2 6V6s into a single 12" speaker , talk about tone!
This amp also has a real real sweet tremolo. It does the blues thing real well, all in all a great little amp......

Yeah, keep it down in here!

I picked up my 1482 a couple of years ago for a C-note.

Same circuit/speaker, slightly different cab.

I was at the Seattle guitar show this past weekend, and a 1472 had $399 on the tag.

I like the 6V6 tone. Kinda loose, but I like it.

yep

The local music store has one sitting in their back room. One of the employees really loves it and keeps it in the back so it wont sell. I know the owner real well and he let me play it. Sounded great, and its in mint condition. Wants $350 for it, which Im not willing to do.

Great amps....I got two years ago for less than $100 each. Halfway between a tweed princeton and tweed deluxe with great tremelo. Don't forget to try bridging channels!

My experience with Silvertones - not good

I had the old 2x12 with head Silvertone amp back in the 60s and it was the laughing stock of all the other musicians. Cheapo construction, lousy reverb, poor wiring, you name it, it had it. I just couldn't afford a better amp back then, but when I did get another amp I gave it away. Had to, no one wanted to pay for it. I wouldn't touch one today if someone gave it to me. A few years ago I did pick up a single 12 Silvertone and it was okay, but nothing special, nice bedroom amp, but useless at gigs. I guess I just don't have the ear to hear the similarities with some of the vintage Fenders. If these amps are so great why aren't people willing to pay real money for them? I would think the $350 being asked for the one mentioned here would be a steal compared to a comparable Fender.

Cabinet construction is cheap, but they are point to point hand wired amps using very similar designs and parts to the classic Fender designs. Like the Supros and Kalamazoo type amps of the period, they especially make great recording and home playing amps. None of the smaller Fender tweed amps are great gigging amps either without miking.

Makes sense to me

that they would be good for practice amps and recording amps. I guess I'm snake-bit with the Silvertones because I actually was using them against Fenders in the 60s and frankly they were very lousy amps. Were never able to stand up either in terms of sound, volume, or quality. A lot were sold, but many died quickly and we replaced them as soon as we could afford it. Interesting how time can turn things around.

I have a 1967 "Solid-State" version the amp head that fits in the speaker cab. While the amp does not sound that great, the cab loaded with two Jensen C-12 is wonderful. Yeah...it's cheap...but I don't care. It still sounds good! I'm always on the lookout for the 2 or 4 6L6 Silvertone head to mate with the speaker cab. Many awesome blues recordings were made with Silvertone / Dano amps. These babies have THE TONE for that 60's blues tone. The Dano DM-25 is another wonderful sounding amp. The 2 6V6 single 12 models are killer little amps.

Sorry to hear you don't like Silvertones. Like I said I think they are great little amps, mine is from the early 60s' and other than a cap job shes' stock. I'm not saying its better than a Fender or Marshall, what I am saying is that this thing has the tone. Its been around for 40 or so years so I can't say "cheap construction". I know a few people that think a Tele is a cheap guitar, we all know better....

I'm not denying the Silvertone isn't good

for some things. It's just that my personal experience with them was not good. I don't deny your amp has withstood the past 40 years (probably in better shape than I am ), but the construction is nonetheless pretty poor, and certainly no better than many of the reissue amps that are often dubbed "crap" by amp purists. I just find it interesting on how a product developes its reputation over time. No argument on the Tele, however. Even the cheapo Squires are liked and played by many and seem to be a great value for the price.

yes they are cheapos

But I just like to look at my Dano DM25 with its big knobs and chrome faceplate. I certainly wouldn't gig with it, but it did come with a Jensen P12Q, and the trem is to die for. It has the cheesiest reverb on the planet. Just like anything else, if it has survived intact for 40 years it becomes more valuable. I saw an old Silvertone 2 watt amp the store wanted $300 for, and if I had money to burn would have bought it just because it was a carbon copy of my first amp and you could just dime the thing into distortion an not disturb the neighbors. If you look closely at these amps, you can see just how far particleboard has come in the last few decades.

DM25

My son has a DM25, and this amp sounds amazing. It has a great tone, nothing about this amp says "cheap" to me.
I love Fender amps and I own a few but the Dano/Silvertone amps are ligit in my book. Its like the Premier reverb unit, no its not a Fender but it has its own thing goin on and you can get some serious verb.
