Peavey Renown

Saw one of these in a local store today. My buddy is a pedal steel player and loves Peaveys for powerful, clean tone. This Renown is a Solo Series, Model 212, with 2 Scorpion 12s. Lotsa dials, EQ, push pull bright & thick, reverb, etc. etc. It is made in Mississippi, SERIAL# 2A-01297252. Any ideas as to when this was made?

It was in ok shape, but dusty & dirty. Speakers looked & sounded to be ok, everything seemed to work. They were asking $199. I was looking at it for a friend.

How many watts is this thing? How old? Is the price right? Gotta admit, the tele I took down & played through it sounded pretty good.

Comments appreciated.

I'm thinking that the Renown amps were made starting in the late 70's, a buddy of mine played in a band, I remember the other guitar player getting a Renown amp , that was about 79/80.
They did top 40, R&R etc.... the Renown was plenty loud.

It's basically the same as the Peavey Special amp but has 2 12's, plenty of power, good clean channel, decent reverb, as you noticed , lot's of knobs, I think the lead channel has active EQ ( boost and cut) also has some boost functions.
If the amp works and the speakers are in good shape $200 sounds like a fair price.

I recall them coming from the early '80s. I used one for years. They can be insanely loud if you crank everything, but personally I found that they weren't the greatest sounding amps going (useable-but not great). They were rated at 175 watts, but at the time my bandmates and I always distinguished between watts and Peaveywatts ;) If it's in good shape that's not too bad a price. Mine was indestructable.

I had one several years ago. The price sounds good, you can't hurt the thing, built to last. I think it was 100 watts. Sounded great with an O.D. pedal. The ONLY reason I sold it was to finance a 5150 head.

i had one that i got in i think '84. it was 160 watts
it was extremely loud, clean channel was all i used . i lugged it around and used it a fair amount and it always worked fine no probs
pretty sure it went for like 3 or 400(new) back then.

If you post the serial number on Peavey's amp discussion page they usually can tell you when it was made. You can probably download the owners manual as well.
