Aha! (5E3 content)

Well, playing with the band with my BF '65 DR was getting me nervous - but I love that sound.

Last night, I brough the Mission 5E3 that I built with the 15" Jensen. I added my Weber MiniMass to keep the volume down. Last week, I picked up an EH Holy Grail reverb as I love reverb and the 5E3 doesn't have reverb.

Anyway, I think I found something that works. The tone was unreal and just got fatter and fatter as the night went on (I had to keep backing off the Mass as the amp got cooking). The Holy Grail sounded great. It adds a little hiss but nothing more than the hiss I get from my BF DR's reverb. The only pedal necessary was my Klon. I pulled the Keely Rat to make room for the EH HG. I even pulled my beloved Z Vex SHO - (ya can't say a 5E3 needs any more boost eh?). The volume knob cleaned things up nicely....the Klon added the over the top sound.

I did have to get the amp off the floor for it to sound right but that just added some fun playing with feedback. The 15" Jensen just kicked butt.

Anyway - problem solved....rig is much simpler...tone to die for. Fear of trashing my vintage amp gone.

Lance,

Which Jensen 15 inch speaker do you have in your 5e3? I'm considering a 15 inch cab for my Mission tweedy deluxe as well...

5e3 !

Lance,
I love my 5e3...got a 12inch Celestion Blue in mine and a Weber mini mass. What a great sound. Definitely NOT blackface but soooo creamy...sustainy...crunchy..bluezey.

Speaker..

It's a P15 Jensen.

See this thread for more info:

Just an FYI....we're talking about a more expensive speaker and custom cabinet...it'll cost more. (worth it!) The 15 really does kick. I've been playing with the amp on a barstool....it's great fun to turn around and point my tele right into all that air!

Lance - if you don't mind me asking, what did the Ampwares cabinet run you?

I gotta find that....

I think I posted it at some time....but - I think the Weber kits are probably the best deal right now. See the Victoria thread nearby....

5E3???

I've been following several discussions on the kits for this amp and I had come questions. I've never built an amp before but I am pretty confident that I could pull it off with the right kit and good instructions - and a phone for help. ????

1. Is it realistic to think I could do it myself - soldering experience=some guitar work (PUPS, Pots etc)
2. If I can pull it off with a kit. What will this amp give me in terms of blues gig type volumes in small venues (40x40 room, reasonably loud drummer, guitar and bass)

I have a Blues Jr that I'm somewhat happy with but I find that it doesn't have the raw power I need to have a consistent- cut through the mix - blues amp. Some nights it's there and others it's not. In addition, I have a jones for a new amp and project. What do you guys think?

A loud drummer will ruin it (won't hear the amp) ..but with a good drummer, 5E3 sounds awesome.

5E3

I put together one of Bruce's 5E3 kits and put in a Celestion Blue, which is a pretty efficient speaker. I have no problem gigging with it. I play in a 5-piece blues band, small venues, and I can't crank it all the way, as it's too loud. Not a lot of clean headroom, mind you, but heck, it's a blues band isn't it?

I should mention that I recently modified the amp to run with 6L6's....just for fun and to find out what it sounds like. I love the sound with 6L6's, but I'm still in the honeymoon period, so my opinion is not worth a lot at this point.

I'm waiting for delivery of my Weber 5e3x2 kit and think it's going to sound pretty great driving my Sunn 115M bass cab. That cab does wonders with single coil guitars.

Cheers,
