Peavey Classic 30 and effects

Yes . . . . another peavey classic 30 thread.

I tried searching, but I couldn't find anything about how you guys specifically run your effects. I have read about how this amp takes pedals very well, but no one mentioned whether or not they were running them through the effects loop or plugging into the front of the amp.

I have several delay and reverb pedals, choruses, etc . . .

my pedal board is still a work in progress, but when it is "done", it will have between 10-12 effects running through it.

so what do you guys do?

also, do you guys have any complaints about the classic 30 thus far? anything that could be improved upon?

Thanks guys

I ignore the effects loop myself, but -- that's based on practicality, not on tone. Normally, I'll switch an effect on and off at different points in a song, so I have to have the box at my feet. If I used the loop, I'd be adding a LOT of extra cable: from the guitar to the amp; then back to me; and back to the amp again.

That being said, I rarely use FX with the Classic 30. I mostly use that amp at home, and for recording. What I'm trying to get out of it in that context is the tone of the amp, combined with a particular guitar.

That being said, in your situation, with 10-12 FX -- I'd be thinking hard about strategy. In your case, you might be better off with the delay and/or phaser and/or chorus and/or flanger running in your effects loop. You might also want to think about switching and routing solutions that run right on your pedalboard (I have a Boss LS-2 line selector, for when the routing starts to get hairy).

As for complaints -- well, I'd probably use this amp more, if it had a brighter overall tone. And it's not loud enough to compete with my drummer!

Personally I have never had good results running pedals into the effects loop on ANY amp. On two Mesa I owned (an F-30 combo and a Roadster head) it significantly impacted the tone/gain of the amp... made the tone and gain of the amp very "weak" sounding. I always run in front of the amp.

I almost never used the FX loop before...but....I recently started using my Holy Grail reverb and Tuna Melt Tremelo through the FX loop of My Laney 50 watt and kept all the other stuff(Micro Amp, OD,Fuzz, EQ, Phaser, Super Shifter) in front....I tried running some of the other effects through the loop, and it was either too much or too little of what I was used to...too much compression, or a weak signal as noted above...the 'verb and trem are excellent and quite a bit more efficient there, however....

Some pedals will sound better in front and some will sound better in the fx loop. The decision is yours.

+1 That's been my experience as well. Makes the amp sterile and anemic sounding. I've never been happy using the effects loop.

I may be the odd man out, but I am more concerned about your pedal board. That is a ton of effects IMO. Have you used this board with other amps before? Do you have any switch gear, or do you just plug the board into your amp?
Are you in a cover band of some sort?
Good Luck

You do have rather a lot of pedals.

I have maybe six on the floor but my favourite is the tuner.

They are usually off. For example, reverb is only of any real use at home and recording; TS9 - the amps overdrive rather well by themselves; flanger/chorus/tremolo - not everyday stuff. It's not that I don't like pedals, I have a collection of usual suspects and oddities, I just don't need them with a decent amp. I don't take the board out now.

Most floor pedals hate an FX loop, the level is too high for them, and their return level is not high enough. The loop is "line" level, the pedals are guitar signal level, They are pretty robust though so it is try it and see.

One pedal that works rather well albeit strangely in a loop is a compressor.
