5E5A OR 5F4
I am wondering about any sound and tone differences between a 5E5A and a 5F4 in compairison.
I now have a 5E5A and want a lighter and smaller amp but don't want to sacrifice tone because I am very happy with my 5E5A amp. I also need the small size for transportation purposes. I have been thinking of a deluxe but need clean head room above what a deluxe will give. So I have been wondering about a high output 5E3 (25 watt)on a 15" speaker. Any experience with this combo? Also wondering about weight of a 5F4 compaired to the 5E5A? Thanks Bruce |

A 5F4 really isn't that much smaller than a 5E5A. If you like the 5E5A - and unless you don't like the 5F4 even better Quote:
+1! My 5E3 has nowhere near the clean headroom of my 5E7. A 5E7 is slightly different from a 5E5A of course, but it is still much closer to a 5E5A than to a 5E3. A high power 5E3 on the other hand sounds like a killer idea. As a matter of fact I'm trying to figure out how to justify such a build myself.

Just change the cabinet. The 5E5 / 5F4 chassis is the same. You want smaller? You want a custom cabinet. It can be packaged in a cabinet 1" wider than a tweed Deluxe with either 2x10" or 1x12". If you want big balls go with 2x10".

My 5E7 lost about 9 pounds when I turned it into a 5B5 Pro (which is a lot like a 5E3 with 6L6's). About three pounds was from the speaker change, a smidgeon was from the lighter homemade chassis, the rest was from the smaller transformers. Now its output is somewhere in the 18-20 watt range.

If you get a 15" 5E3 it's not going to be much smaller than a 5E5A. A 5F4 isn't much smaller than a 5E5A as mentioned previously. It's about 3" shorter but the same width approx.
Get a neo speaker for your 5E5A and turn it into a 5E5 which is sort of like a two-channel deluxe with 6L6s. I'm doing that to mine right now. |

I have no intention of getting rid of my 5E5A but rather want something just like it in a smaller package.
muchxs, you say a 5F4 with a pair of ten's will fit in a cab 1 inch larger than a deluxe? That would be great, but will the tone be same in comparison? Or would I be better with a 50 oz. 12" alnico Weber. I had my 5E5A on a 12" and didn't like it as much as the Weber 15a150 Speakers have to be alnico by the way. |
