Twin or tweed or.......? HELP

I am in a pickle about my tone. I play mostly cover band stuff so I have to get all the sounds possible and prefer that brent mason sound for my country and have some quality stomp boxes or my dirt and effects. The problem I have is my twin seems to lack something. Its a 74 sf twin with JBL D120 speakers and I like the sound of it but not love it. Its either too bassy or too ice picky and never just right. And the reverb lacks something to be desired. Maybe Im being picky but I used to gig with a 69 bandmaster reverb that I put in a combo cab with a 15 inch webber speaker and it sounded fantastic but it wasnt very dependable so I just put it away and bought the twin.

I was thinking maybe sell the twin and get a tweed bassman RI or maybe even use the money to rebuild the bandmaster reverb or even make a vibroverb clone out of the BMR. Another option is maybe get the twin blackfaced. Another amp model may even be good but fender is all I have ever used. I have three kids that insist on eating EVERYDAY so money is an issue. What do you guys think

I'd say stick with the twin and mod it, maybe try some diff. speakers, get the amp gone through my a good tech to make sure everything is in good working order.

I don't know any more than what I've read, but the Cyber Twin sounds like it covers the bases of many styles of music at the touch of a button or footswitch. This sounds perfect for guitarists in cover bands who require quick switches on the fly to approximate the sounds of the records. If that's what you're after, it might be something to check out.

It just lacks a sparkle that my bmr has. It may be the bmr is closer to a blackface circuit than the twin. Ive heard that super reverbs, vibroverbs, and bandmaster reverbs all kinda share the same circuit minus the output transformer and the bmr is a non master volume amp. I dont know what it is but it just doesnt have the same feel of the bmr and maybe I just played the bmr so long that I just got so used to it that nothing will sound right. Its a mistery to me because when I got the twin I thought I had pinnacled as far as amps went because there is nothing better, but I havent been tottally pleased with it and I dont hate it . It just sounds plain jane with no character

K E E P T H E B M R!

Unless it has been heavily modded (never mind the combo thing) or has been in a fire it can't be that hard for a good tech to find out what makes it unreliable and have that taken care of. The bmr tone is what you like after all. If it was my amps I would sell the Twin to finance having the bmr serviced.

Good luck!

The twin is a great amp and I gigged with one for years and have the bad back to prove it.

That said after hearing other guys rigs I was in a similar situation. Have you played through a twee Bassman yet? That amp is a dream wrapped up in tweed. You'll find it more touch responsive than that twin, they're more alive, warm. It also has a little built in compression via the cathode follower that really adds to the brilliance of the amp. Not to mention 4x10"'s pushing that air. Jumpering the channels makes for a nice fat tone. I've seen a lot of guys that flip more amps than a short order cook does pancakes and they all gravitate back that amp sooner or later.

The BMR stays

If I had the twin blackfaced who is a good person to do it and how much would it cost roughly. I played an original 66 twin and it was AWESOME so that may be what I do. I cant afford an original blackface but maybe the wife wont freak if I make one out of the one I already have

The BMR has earned its place in my home from now on no matter what. I have done a lot of gigs with it and I will eventually get it serviced and use it for jam sessions and small stuff so if it goes out in the middle of a set it wont tic off anyone. I love my BMR

Update!!!!

I was hired to play in a local theatre for a Patsey Cline impersonater ( I know its cheesy but it pays and was kinda fun) and during that gig I found a sweet spot or something. It sounded fantastic, it sounded like it jumped right out of a recording from the 60s. I was so proud of how my rig sounded I was glowing LOL

Never apologize for paying tribute to Patsy! Unless it's some guy singing in falsetto. Then you should be ashamed.
