Nature's Attenuator

A pillow!

Man....this is gonna sound so stupid but I can't believe how well it works! Sure I love feeling the vibration of the ground under my feet and feeling my pulse quicken with that first monster chord but, hey....I got neighbours!

Anyone else regularly use a pillow?

Long ago in a similar situation, i'd put the amp up on the couch.

I use a pillow all the time, the only problem is the back of the amp is left exposed so it still gets pretty darn loud if I'm not careful.

I am serious! Has anyone ever tried a Light Dimmer Switch as an attenuator?

That was the good thing about the couch — you could situate it so you had plenty of ventilation, but the back of the couch would soak up the backblast. A big stuffed chair would work too.

They are usually "choppers" in that they reduce voltage by chopping the tops of the wavefrom off. Maybe as an effect, but not close to a clean anttenuator

No! They are far too noisey for this purpose.

Variacs can be used to lower the operating voltages to create early distortion, but if your amp is tube, turning down the mains volatge ALSO reduces the heater voltage. So the tubes run cool and inefficiently (even more than normal)!

Just use a decent pedal with your amp!?
