Reverb doesn't work on BFDR - could this cause early and dirty breakup?
I'm presuming that the reverb tube is gone - as the whole thing was serviced recently and a new reverb tank put in.
If the tube is gone would this cause the overall amp to breakup early?

I seriously doubt it (reverb) can effect breakup. As far as the reverb, I was thinking the tube, or the tank. You know how those little wires in that reverb tank can be, even if it is new.

Check to make sure the foam pad was removed from the reverb tank. That pad is used just to protect the springs in shipping to prevent the springs from tangling or rattle.

Tom, how does the Normal channel function? IF the unwanted distortion exists through that channel as well as the Vib Channel, then your problem is farther down the line in the circuit. IF the Norm ch is operating properly, then your problem is somewhere in that Vib Ch circuit. IF the problem is restricted to the Vib ch; unplug V3, the 12AT7 reverb driver, and see if that distortion goes away. I am thinking not, but it is a quick test.
As for the reverb function, it could be anything...tube, reverb tranny, board component, tank, cables. I have seen reverb cables cause terrible problems creating noise and ruining the signal when a ground is crossing the lead of the cable. IF the problem exists in the Vib ch alone, sub V1 or a good spare 12AX7 into the spot for V2. These are the respective preamp tubes for the Norm and Vib channels. IF the problem exists in both channels, sub in a good 12AX7 into V4. IF that doesn't change something, try putting the sub tube in V6...subbing for the 12AT7 driver. A 12AX7 will work here for test purposes. IF these subs dont' cure the problem, you may have some bad power tubes, or.....the amp has problems that demand some tech work inside. |
