Red knob "The Twin" value

My good friend (who happens to be computer illiterate) has asked me to help him sell his red knob Twin. It's mint....recent re-tube, no issues.

The searchs I've done indicate a wide variety of prices they are selling for. Any help from those here in the know will be greatly appreciated.

Check around

Hello... here's One on eBay for $650

Which I think is overpriced.

I've seen them sell for $350 - $400. $500, however, would be a more fair valuation for the "Evil Twin" a.k.a. the "Red-knobbed Devl".
Great clean tone available.

They have a problem where they stretched a capacitor too tight and they eventually break. They could have bypassed this problem by just adding 1/4" or less of wire to the cap... They are stinking LOUD....

At this time and place (2009 in Dallas TX) I think $550 is a fair price for one in good condition. If you can find a good one with fresh tubes for less than that, more power to you, but I think you get what you pay for.

I paid $450 for my first one in 1988, and I replaced the factory power tubes around 1992 or so. It was in storage from 1995 to 1999, but the tubes I installed in '92 are still going strong. I think those were NOS Phillips tubes.

I got a second one as a spare about four years ago and I paid $500 for that one. I immediately replaced the power tubes in that one too.

Both of mine have served me well for many years, but I have never used them for any kind of professional touring. Typically just local gigs, and less than once per month.

Although both of mine have been trouble-free (knock on wood) for years, apparently there have been some issues with these amps. Just make sure yours is clean or you could end up spending a lot more later...

Personally, I think I got a good deal at $500, as all the ones I've seen for less have been pretty banged up. I wouldn't mind paying $600-$650 IF it came with some kind of warranty.

When, I bought mine I got it for 500 dollars, mint. I just traded it at a local guitar shop today for 450. I also traded my blackout tele and got a brand new tiny terror and afender hot rod deluxe cab without any extra cash out of my pocket. (sorry for the ramblings, I'm just really excited) The 80s twins to me are the best out there. They sound amazing and IMHO have the only useable gain channel I've ever heard on a fender. I replaced some of the tubes to soften the reverb and to get a lower, smoother growl out of the clean channel. AMAZING!

Does he need that much clean headroom? IMO, your friend will be much happier with a SF Twin. Long after the Red Knob has passed into the history books, a SF Twin will still be a viable and sought after amp.
There are WAY too many other amp choices to be getting involved with The Twin. We owned a 1989 for a few years. I put a lot of time and money into it. They are good sounding amps in their own right, but there are a lot of other amps available that will get you in that territory. Talk him out of it.
Good Luck

I haven't found any amp that has the same clean tone, except perhaps a Dumble, and I can't afford one of those.

I honestly don't know why people hate on the RK Twin so much. I have played mine side by side with SF Twins that people rave about, and I have consistently preferred the tone of the RK Twin, both clean and overdriven.

Howdy,

I've played a BF Twin and still prefer the clean tones from my red knob "The Twin". The clean tones from my red knob Super 112 (60 watts, all-tube) beat both of these amps!

You could also look at some of the threads at the bottom of this page if you need more information. If I were you, I would try and stay away from the opinions where people just say they love it or just say they hate it. If their's no subtance just move on... haha

I agree the cleans the "Red Knob" Super 112 put out are probably the best I have ever heard. I love mine and will never sell it.
