'54 Pro versus Goodsell

I've been playing a modern Tele, and a '54 Strat through a '54 Pro for years and the amp is to the point in its age that I'm having trouble with it regularly....keeps having small problems in the middle of a gig.......thinking about a Goodsell as a backup/companion.....any advice on which cabinet configuration I should have? I'm so used to the single 15" speaker.....will 2 x 10 or 2 x 12 give me a similar sound? Any input would be appreciated........and NO YOU CAN'T HAVE MY STRAT!

I 'spose with that 1x15 config, you've grown pretty accustom to a whalloping amount of low end. All my Goodsell's are 1x12's...and I love 'em all. You might hit Richard via email directly and get his thoughts. I just can't imagine a nicer combination than am old '54 Strat & a Super 17...maybe a '54 Tele & a Super 17 (I love Tele's). --RH

p.s. please reconsider the Strat. : )

15's don't necessarily have more low end than a 12. It depends on the speaker design and amp.

I have the amps you are talking about and prefer 15's and tweed. It would be a long explanation if I went into detail. I think you will have to try a Goodsell and see.

A Super 17 Mark III will keep up with the 54 Pro. A 2x12 Goodsell weighs a freakin ton. Its ridiculous. My advice would be to find a Mark II with reverb and trem. That will be in the bigger cabinet. Or a 1x12 Custom 33 which would be in the same cab as a Mark II and have a more manageable weight.

Given that you have a combination that seems to work i'd suggest either service the Pro back to bombproof or get a victora 3515 or maybe a Regal II. 2x12 is not the same world as a 1x15. They both have their place but with a strat and a 15 i'm in heaven

+1 on servicing the old PRo. Your friend needs and deserves the attention. There is no reason that old amp can't be made reliable again.

Thanks for all your advice.....I've gone with a Goodsell w/ single 15".....Richard has a cabinet that he had made to accommodate 4/10's.........it will work great for the Custom
33 chassis & a single 15".....it didn't work with 4 10's, so he had it in inventory apparently waiting for me!
.....I'm also going to have the Pro
refurbished, but I'm pretty sure the Goodsell will be the road amp......again thank you all, and if you haven't tried a Goodsell yet, you're in for a treat!
