are you saying your amp would serve as your "monitor?" if that's the case, then how loud is the stage volume? if you need to stay clean and the stage volumes loud AND the amp is working as your monitor, i'd say no...

but if you have an actual monitor with the whole mix, you'd be amazed with how small an amp you can get away with. I know a wedding band guitarist who regularly gigs with a 90's era solid state fender champion 110 and a multi-effects unit. That band has a top notch PA, everybody's miked and they have good monitors, and he never feels "lost."

In that case, the amp just has to be at least as large as the microphone.

if you have a decent cat behind the board, then i say no problem with the small amp then...

the one thing you might need to take into account--do you guys rehearse all mic'd up just like on "game day?"

I'd say as long as it's audible to you from a distance of two inches, you're good.

Zappa used a Pignose to record almost the entire Apostrophe(') album.

If your mic can hear it, your sound guy should be able to make sure you can hear it, too. Mic sensitivity and background noise could be issues, but not likely in a church with a decent mic.

This is cool but the PINK doily really disturbs me with this set up.

-Since you play at church, I'm sure you know who Rebbecca St. James is. Years ago, I helped set the stage for one of her gigs in 2000-2001. Her rhythm guitarist, sorry can't remember his name, was using a Hiwatt head through a couple Marshall cabs. Sitting on top of one of the cabs was a small combo amp. I took a closer look at it and it was an old Silvertone 1452, miced up and ready to go. I asked the guy why he was using that when he had the Hiwatt. He said that with that little amp and a Dano Dan-Echo pedal, he gets the tone he looks for when mixed with the Hiwatt.

Matt

I used to do a regular gig with a pignose amp. The band had Bass, Drums and amplified harmonica.

Hard to imagine the ac4 will be a good solution.

But, small amps are all the rage. I often read posts from people who try this sort of thing, 5-watt amp with a full band. They are surprised when their "loud" 5-watt amp gets swallowed up on stage, even with mics and monitors.

Try it, it may work for you. I've never been comfortable with amps that small on a full stage. Let the learning curve begin.

I don't know if you bought yet or what, but the Vox AC4TV will not give you much clean headroom, if you want a clean tone. It breaks up pretty early, even on the 4w setting. It is surprisingly loud though.

Let us know how it works out. I mic for home recording with a Shure SM57. I get good results.

I use a stand for recording so that I can get that perfect spot after spending a long time finding it, but I just drape it over the amp live.

I personally use it's cousin:

...But the difference may not really be worth it in a live setting with a 6-piece.

But you may want to modify it to take a Footswitch...
