Opinions SFDR or go for SFTR

I am in search of a new amp and have been bouncing between these two models. I like the sound of a SFDR and have a few artists that I like quite a bit that use SFDRs with pedals which is what I will be looking into doing. If I look into getting one of these the price will be around 1k for a reasonable one I believe?!?

That being said I just found a SFTR locally that has d120f speakers and new GT 6l6chp's in it that look like they are in good condition. The amp has a master volume so it is somewhere between 73 and 82.

Examples of sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALaE7ymqrU0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-24m...layer_embedded

I think she's playing a DR of some sort in the Letterman vid.

So should I try to find a DR somewhere around or on ebay or should I pounce on this SFTR that I spoke of for around $750? Would I be able to achieve these sounds with the TR even though I probably won't be needing all the headroom that it has? The headroom of it is scaring me into thinking that I will never get close to any kind of sweet spot at a manageable level(with or w/o pedals).

Sorry for the barrage of questions, I've been scouring the net for info and opinions and figured that I should just ask. Thanks ahead.

Nathan

I'm not sure how you would know what a Deluxe Reverb sounds like by watching the clip from the TV show. She has so many effects on her guitar. What do you like about the sound from that clip?

The second clip is the total opposite - completely clean, at least in the beginning.

boxer,

What are you planning to use the amp for? Home noodling? Jamming with some buddies? Small gigs? Larger/outside gigging with a loud band?

I know others here disagree, but IMO a SFDR can handle all of the above very well while the Twin is best suited to the latter application, and is a beast to tote (but you're young). I know my SFDR is a life-time keeper.

I agree with Dave. And even if your going to do big venues , their going mic the amp and send back to ya in the monitors. So I think the Deluxe would be a good choice. I gig with a Princeton in my blues band and were pretty loud.

A DR is simply an amp that you can't go wrong with. A TR is a great sounding clean machine- maybe the clean machine. But unless you're playing larger shows unmiked, most of the TR's range will go untapped. And even dimed it's not going to have the spongy feel and break-up of the Deluxe.

Owned a 1965' BF Twin until I got my SF 73' Deluxe Reverb and never looked back...a Twin has the best cleans; at any volume; so if you play clean mostly go with a Twin. If your playing unmiked large outdoor venues or concert halls go with a Twin. The Deluxe Reverb is the total package. You should have no problem keeping up with any hard hitting band as long as you get an efficient speaker in there and the tubes are good. Anything 99db and up. I play lead in my band with one and the rhythm guitarist plays a 60 watt 2x12 Hot Rod Deville. My stuff always cuts above his. Go deluxe, you wont be sorry!

I'd grab that TR w/ D120s at that price. Keep it for a while, you'll be glad you did.

She's a heavy pig, though.

I know which one I'd prefer to carry... Deluxe Reverb, no contest.

- What I'm probably looking for in her sound is the cleans in the second vid, but more importantly making sure that the amp will take pedals well.

I was kinda set on this twin since it was close by and wouldn't have to fiddle with finding a decent one on ebay. For my application I do think that I should probably go with a DR; bedroom, small to medium shows, ect.

Any advice or warnings for what to look for online? I was hoping to go for a silverface for the point to point reliability and fixability and since they are around the same price as the RI. Thanks guys!

I really wish I had a DR. What a great sound. Twins are really heavy and I don't think they sound as good. JMHO

Get the Twin for those speakers! If you dont like it remove the speakers sell em on ebay...if theyre all original and in good shape you can get at least 400 for them alone.

Well, I know you won't lose any money re-selling the Twin if it doesn't work out for you, so it's not a bad solution, really. Especially if it's earlier SFTR (before '76). They don't really start sounding great till you're about 3 on the volume, which with those JBLs is going to peel paint at 30 paces...

I'd go and try the Twin first, especially since it's close by to you...

I've got both - they're 1968 Dripguards and they're both very special.
But here's "the kicker" with Humbuckers I like the Deluxe and with Single Coils I prefer the Twin. I believe for most of You it's the other way around.

I actually agree with you here; when I switched to a Deluxe I found myself playing SG's more than Strats. I've always felt at home with a strat until recently. Single coils seem to balance the bassy-ness of a Twin and higher-output pickups seem to accentuate the bass. On a deluxe it likes the drive of higher output pickups to round it out a bit. My two cents, cant complain with either one really.

That's a great price on the Twin, and it's worth more than a comparable Deluxe so you could always sell/trade down the road if you decide the Twin doesn't cut it.

Alright I think I'm going to go ahead with the twin for now, I think it is post 72' but I went and played it today and I thought it sounded pretty solid. It doesn't come with a footswitch though, where would be the best place to find one? or build one?

Also when playing it I could adjust the reverb, but the trem could not be adjusted. Was this because of a lack of the footswitch or amp? Thanks guys.
