57 Champ vs Champion 600

I hear good things about the new '57 Champ, but also the 600. I know the 57 is point to point hand wired and the 600 is pc board, but is that enough to pay 5-6 times as much for it? Is the tone in the 57 that much better than the little 600?

The '57 is a reasonable facsimile of the original. It's expensive, though.

The Champion isn't even close. There's all sorts of modern circuit board crap inside. Yeah you can mod it but why? There's guys selling these on the 'net, they figure anything you do to a $200 amp is value-added. It's pretty much a $200 amp no matter what so why put more money into one? Like the Valve Junior, they're a hard sell at a "value-added" price.

If you really liked the '57 you could do much better ($$$-wise) buying a kit or getting someone to lace up a clone for you. The '57 Champ is $1000 street! As I like to say, 1 knob, 3 tubes, 5 watts, 8" and $1000!

I put one of mine up against an original over at Retro Music (de facto Home of the Juke ) yesterday. They've got an original one year only black tolex '64, pretty minty especially compared to a lot of the beat up tweeds. But... curses! Someone cheated! Their '64 had an 8" Eminence P.A. speaker in it with a 2" voice coil. That does quite a bit to help the bottom end.

Their original will go out the door for approx. what the '57 reissue sells for.

BTW you'll need to do some fancy Sawzall work or build a custom cabinet to fit a decent speaker to the 600.

It's hardly a fair comparison is it?

Inevitably there'll be some fairly major differences between the 2 amps given the way they're built, components, etc.

Might be easier to hear the differences if the same guitar or harmonica was being used through both amps.
