Good trade? Guy wants to hand me his Boogie...

So there's this guy, who is really into my new (to me) Fuchs Blackjack 21 head. I love the amp, but truthfully, it doesn't have enough headroom or overall volume for lots of the gigs I play. It just sounds super freakin' sweet, so I don't blame him for wanting it.

He's offered his '81 Boogie Mark IIB 1X12 combo as a straight trade. It's the 60 watt, no reverb/no graphic EQ version. It's in great shape, and was recently (in the last couple of years) re-capped and just re-tubed.

By all accounts, these things have killer clean channels (which is all I would ever use) and are very reliable. Anybody have any input? Do you think I should take the deal? Do you think it's a fair deal? I know the Boogie is heavy as all get out, but I was thinking of getting around that by removing the 20 pound EV speaker and using the amp as a head with a seperate cab.

Somebody steer me in the right direction, I can't make a decision.

I haven't played a Fuchs yet, but you can always count on the Boogie to deliver. If both amps are equal priced, then it's probably a good deal.

Not having heard the Fuchs, it's hard for me to say. But the MK II is a desireable amp. You could always sell or trade it for something different if it didn't deliver the goods with out losing anything.

If it helps any, most of the time I use my MK I RI clean using pedals for grit. Sounds great. Lots of clean headroom.

That's a tough one.

On the one hand, the Boogie is never gonna run out of headroom, but on the other, it also takes a PhD to operate. Way too many levers and dials.

The Fuchs may not have the headroom right now, but is there anything you can do about that? Lower gain preamp tubes? Bias changes? Higher efficiency speaker?

The Mark II's are pretty straight forward to operate. I have one of the same vintage. But, with reverb and EQ. The clean channel is amazing. They are heavy. And loud.

I would go for it if your not happy with the Fuchs.

...or you could keep the Fuchs and use what I use to make my Princeton Reverb big enough for ANY gig:

Just sayin'...

Ya, if you love the tone of the Fuchs, I would mic it and call it a day.

Sounds like you made your decision...

"I love the amp, but truthfully, it doesn't have enough headroom or overall volume for lots of the gigs I play"

Personally I need an amp with enough headroom because I play some gigs where the PA is only for VOX and/or the sound guy isn't really on his A-game.

Both valuable. Both marketable.

I would take that boogie and never look back.

I have that exact boogie with the boogie speaker. I've played retirement homes and outdoor festivals. I've had it since '83. I have it in a road case and have never had a problem moving it around but I'm a big guy. In fact I've been looking for something lighter for a year and have been through 6 other amps. None have come close. So I stay with that one. It should do anything you need. It made me a good living for 20 years.

As far as your amp, I have no idea what it sounds like but know that I see alot of them. I don't see how you can go wrong with the mkII but again, that's all I've played for over 25 years.

If you think a boogie is too complicated, you need to put the guitar down and step away. I mean, volume, tone.....how hard can it be? Is it that it has bass, treble and middle instead on one called "tone"?

Boogie Mark IIb is in the house. Guy brought it over, and I took it. We fired up my Fuchs for a run through and he got visibly horny. So I fired up the Boogie, played it for awhile, and fell in love with it.

It should indeed do anything I would ever need. I've been messing with the EQ and the pull pots, and you can get pretty much anything out of this amp.

Oh, and if any of you guys EVER hear me gripe about not having enough volume, ever again, drop this thing on my head. Good gravy does this little box ever shake the house.

Sounds great at low volumes too though, and sounds like Thor's hammer through my 2X12 cab. Bonus, it's heavy, but not as heavy as I thought it would be. Maybe it's just been too long, but it seems MUCHO lighter than I remember my Mark IV being. And sounds a lot better too.

I'm ashamed to admit that I made some assumptions based on the words "Boogie" and "mk n." Those always trigger visions of space shuttle controls in my head, but I used to have a Studio .22 that was as simple as I could want, and sounded astoundingly good.

I still come down on the side of seeing if there's any more headroom to squeeze out of the Fuchs, but only because I like to be different, and because I've been punished by Boogie players abusing their headroom before.
