2x10 or 1x12 cab

Going to build an extension cab for my Peavey Bandit 112 TT.

Considered doing a 2x10 with a closed back. The amp already has a 1x12 open back. Any benefits from going the 2x10 route?

You need to give us more information about what it is you want to achieve with your setup. What sort of music, styles, where you play, etc.

There can be dramatic differences between the 1 x 12 and 2 x 10 speaker arrangement, and then again with open vs. closed back cabinets.

For example, closed back cabinets tend to be very directional, and don't have the sound dispersion of open back cabinets. While this can make them very tight and focused sounding, it can also mean that your drummer has no idea what's going on because he can't hear anything you play.

Well, I've moved away from the whole modeling setup thing so I'm more concerned with my tone as it's created by my rig, rather than just letting software do the work.

That said, I play really a wide range. I love classic rock, clean tones, a little bluesy tone and also a heavier tone (like a Mark Tremonti - Creed tone). What I can't stand is the "scoop". I just don't see the need for removing what is IMO the most important frequency band in the signal; the mids.

That said, I like the ability to cut through the mix with mids where they should be, but also want the dispersement of sound. The rig will actually be the Bandit 112 TT on top and the cab on the bottom. The Bandit is open back and disperses well but I was thinking maybe a 2x10 open on the bottom might be a little TOO aggressive. I'd love to test it but that's an expensive test!

Isn't it just another way around actually?

Open back cabinet is like a hyper cardioid mic - it shoots straight forward and straight back but in front it's more directional than closed back cab.

Not in my experience. Closed back cabs send the sound forward in a narrow cone. Open back cabs spread it all around both in front and in back of the amp.

Yes, I actually considered that as well. Maybe a 15" with an open back. That might be really cool.

I know I'm flip flopping on what I want but I'm kind of torn.

My SX Nashville (in mod stage) can twang well as can my already modded Affinity Tele.

My new Godin SD22 actually has a nice brightness to it even though its a HB in the bridge (maple/poplar body and a maple neck and fretboard). The 1x15 might be a really cool option.

For a compact cabinet, a closed but ported cabinet helps deliver the bass. With a generous sized cab and a 15" speaker, open would be the way to go. Or make the cabinet convertible!!!

I hear a lot of good things about the Weber 15" California. Go AlNiCo for the mojo. Not cheap, however, $235 on the Weber web site.
