How to avoid the POP when you turn off an amp?

I have a SS Fender Champ 110 amp I keep in my living room. When I turn it off it always makes a loud noise. What causes this and is there a way to avoid it? I could make a male connector plug that loops back on itself and plug that into the headphone jack before I shut it off, but that seems silly.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Have you tried turning the volume all the way down?

Does the amp have a solid ground wire/connection (does it have a 3prong plug)?

both up and down, doesn't seem to matter. Neither does the volume pot on the guitar.

Yes. I think so. I'll check when I get home. It's possible the cheap house I am living in does not have a true earth ground. I have tried it on different plugs and it always makes the noise.

Shutdown noises in solid-state amps are a question of DESIGN, and not your behavior.

When pulling together the design of a power amp, one always considers the shut down condition. You know that the power supply will drop in some fraction of a second, and you can't guarantee what state the output transistors are in at that moment, nor do you know what the prior stages are doing. That is why most designs incorporate output stage protection that cuts off the output BEFORE the driver and preamp stages, etc.

The SS Champ is popping because the engineers at Fender didn't think that this was much of an issue. I seriously doubt that there is anything you can do about it.

That wasn't what I wanted to hear but in no way a surprise. Is there a downside to making a looped mail connector and plugging that into the headphone jack before shutting down?
