SCXD "voice settings"

Does anyone else think the channel 2 "voice" settings on the SCXD are crap? The only one I ever use is #7 (British Combo) which is somewhat tolerable. It may just be my individual amp, for all I know-- seems like that channel is a lot noisier in general, and there is an amazing discrepency in volume between the different voices.

Not a big deal as I use the clean channel almost exclusively, but am just wondering what others think of channel 2.

I use a lot of the voices. They're not as good as the real tube amp they're emulating, but I find them quite useful. They're certainly better than anything else that's available for the price.

I've collected a bunch of settings that I and others find useful here:

Maybe you have your gain up too high or something.

Like Bill said, the key is taking it easy on the gain on a lot of the settings. True, you aren't going to get a 1x10 combo to sound like a Marshall stack, but even in its most extreme settings, there are some tones that are fun to play around with.

That said, I too almost always keep it on the first channel and rely on pedals to dirty things up.

I experimented last night and discovered I like the #3 setting, with just a touch of gain. Very slightly overdriven tone.

I just got one yeaterday, and there seems to be alot of potential in it. You need to remember that companies tend to way overdo the preset voicings, so starting out with low settings and working from there is gonna be your best bet.

I just bought one last week on eBay and I have to say I think it has too many voices. Do you really need all those models?

I like it for the clean channel and send it to a 1x12... I wonder if it's really the right amp for me (spot the excuse to buy another amp), but for the clean alone, it's a keeper.

The voices I find most useful are 1 (Champ), 3 (driven tweed), 10 (HRDx, Blues Junior substitute at low gain) 15 (jazzy), and 16 (acoustic). And, of course, the fabulous clean channel. The tremolo effect covers Vibro Champ and Princeton Reverb nicely, but I wish it was variable speed, not three pre-selected speeds. I don't use delay, but the Vibrasonic setting is fun. I've also used the chorus to get a 12-stringy sound out of the acoustic voice.

I use the 3, driven tweed, the most... Wonder if that means I should find myself a tweed Vibrolux clone? Hmmm

But I also use several of the others on a pretty regular basis. I use them when I'm playing around the house. A lot of the time I get some song stuck in my head I want to figure out or goof with, so I fiddle with the voices for a minute or two to get close and then fiddle with the song for forever.

It's a fun little tool!

Has anybody swapped speakers on this amp yet? I think I'd like something a little less brittle-sounding, and with a fuller, more powerful low end. The amp sounds great through a 2 x 12 cab, but I don't want to carry around a separate cab right now.

I swapped the speaker in mine for an Emi 'Lil Buddy, installed some RCA's, rebiased and lastly got a Heyboer TO20 from David Allen. Damn this is a nice sounding amp!!! The TO20 really opened up the tone with more note definition and increased the clean headroom.
