speaker swap for Blues Jr
I have a Peavy Classic 30 (16ohm) and a Fender Blues,Jr (8 ohm) and want to try a new speaker. Was thinking of first getting a 16 ohm Blue Dog for the C30 but also giving it a try in the Fender.
What is the consequence of putting a 16 ohm in the Fender - I know it can't hurt it but will it sound the same ? Like, if I decide later to buy an 8ohm Blue Dog for the Fender ? any suggestions for a good speaker to try (not too $)

Weber C12N in mine...
I won't embarrass myself by trying to answer the "ohmage" question, but I'll tell that the Weber C12N (now 12F150 i think) sounds great in my BJ.

I can't speak to the ohms either, but I can say that I've read glowing reviews of the Reverend All-Tone speaker in the Blues Junior (on other forums). It's a very reasonably priced speaker.
I personally have a Celestion Greenback in mine, it's not ideal, but an improvement over the stock speaker IMO. I run some cooler burning power tubes from Eurotubes and feel that the tone got more of the Fender sound I was looking to get out of it. If that makes sense...(YMMV)

a forthright "I don't know"
normally Fender amps can tolerate a 100% impedance mismatch either way but I would wait till Norwine or Cookie or somebody else who knows what they're talking about chimes in.
but as to the sound: I don't thing the 30-watt 16-ohm Blue Dog (that you need for your C-30) is going to gave you a real accurate picture of what the 15-watt 8-ohm will sound like in the BJ. The lower-power speaker is running pretty close to the limits of its abilities, which is part of the sound, I think. Either way this is a fine-sounding speaker in a BJ. I've said it before but this speaker and a new (cool) set of JJs made this a whole new amp. Good luck. |

I have a Blues jr. I have tried the stock speaker, a Jensen C12N and the Cannibis Rex (Patriot Series). It sounds better with the C12N and even better, very, very nice with the Cannibis Rex.

thanks for the responses - Tremo, here's a dumb follow up question -
you say the BJ won't develop full power with the 16 ohm speaker...........is this such a bad thing? that is, would the amp be quieter (that's OK with me-it's plenty loud) but sound like it's pushing real hard ? dose'nt the power amp have to push harder into 16ohms? not sure I understand my own question :)
