TAD 6L6

Hi Chris,

I needed an amp for Will Ray to use with me and the Crumbs last Saturday as he fllew in with his G&L and pedals only, so I pulled a modded Boogie SOB out of my back room and put the TAD 6L6's in it. I set the bias at 36ma and abused the snot out of it at full volume for an hour or so through an older (74) Marshall 4x12 with V-30's on the top and G12H-30's on the bottom. Nice compression, punchy, and really smooth. Off to the gig I went. We were outdoors in Dallas Alley in the West End and Will had one of his normal absolutely smoking nights. They sounded just as good in the brick canyon as they did out in rural land where I first heard them. Sunday I popped the amp back on the bench and they hadn't varied more than .5ma with the bit of break in that they had. The TAD 6L6 is a bargain for sure and they are built like a tank. They have the best harmonic content of any production 6L6 I have heard in a while. I don't know how they perform in a smaller quieter setting yet as the only time I have used them was in JJ's Blues Bar in Fort Worth and that was on virtually the same settings Will used it at outdoors. I will say that when they are cranked they sing. Will was favorably impressed with the overall tone saying that it had headroom and punch while having a full round sound.

Thanks Cookie!

Cookie, thanks for the report. I've really not been impressed with the current crop of 6L6s from other vendors... The JJ, Svetlana (Winged C???), and various EHs all seem to sound like the basic Sovtec 5881. Compared to an RCA blackplate they are just kind of lifeless w/ not much character... and they seem to lose their shimmer rather quickly.... I'm anxious to hear how these hold up. Please keep us informed.

well i tried them??

i pulled some sylvania 6l6gc's out of my BFSR and put the small bottle TAD BP 6L6GC'S in and they did'nt even come close!they were bias at 35ma's with 455 on the plate voltage!

they killed all of my bottom end and were alot brighter sounding!so 10 minutes in and rite out they came and back went the sylvania.

i had big hopes for these too!!

you may want to try those at a hotter/ higher current rating. I'd say around 44ma. For some reason a lot of these new tubes need to be run hotter to sound better. Maybe someone on this board can explain why.
