59 Fender Champ - help

I inherited a 1959 Fender Champ. It is all original - except in the 70's my dad took the tweed off and put vinyl woodgrain on it. Brutal! This spring I finally got around to refinishing it properly with tweed and it looks great. Also it sounds great. Right now I use just a Holy Grail reverb pedal with it, and it sounds amazing, but I want to find the right distortion pedal. Something that crunches, but that I can back off for a more subtle sound. Price is also a factor, I can't break the budget on this. Looking for suggestions and guidance, thanks!

Well, OD pedals are very subjective as well as alot of other factors in guitar gear/tone. I like the tried and true Ibanez Tube Screamer. And particularly the BYOC overdrive pedal kit (TS-808 clone kit) that you can tweak with the extra parts in the kit. I A/B'd the BYOC kit with a vintage TS-808 and a boutique TS-9 and the BYOC kit sounded better and had a better respnose and feel. The Blackstone Appliances overdrive is VERY tube amp like and the Lovepedal Les Lius is another that worked for me with my Champ. I say try a bunch if you can and see what you like.

I never really considered the BYOC angle. That sounds pretty fun, I might give it a try. They make it sound pretty easy on the website, could it be that simple to put together a world class pedal?

With my old Champ a Boss Super Overdrive was the ticket
